Weather and tide - Surf Edition

Hello community,

I use a Instinct solar Surf Edition since bebining of November (before I used a Rip Curl GPS 2). I noted some interesting improvement of the software to have a better Garmin surf experience.

  1. The tides datas comes from internet but the watch must could save the datas to be used during surfing session. It's interesting to keep the tide level during the session. My Rip Curl GPS 2 did this fonction... The watch is able to save datas. Why the tides datas don't during no synchronisation with internet ?? Idem for the weather datas ??
  2. The weather datas don't show the wave forecast (average high and direction of the swell)... Problematic to looking for a surf session... This data couldn't be added during the next watch firmware update ?

If a Garmin developer read me, please consider this surf app improvement.

Thx for all

  • Hi Paul B,

The first point you make is an issue that has been mentioned by many Solar Surf users for the last year-and-a-half, but unfortunately never got really addressed by Garmin. There have been plenty of incremental updates over the months which may or may not have improved tide-data-retention on the watch (perhaps better called: prevention of the loss of data after disconnection with phone), so at least make sure you have the latest firmware updated.

The second issue, seeing what actually has been delivered and improved so far, is beyond my wildest dreams.

Other than that; surf-tracking is allegedly barely functional on the instinct solar surf (again, the latest beta firmware is supposed to improve this issue, but reports so far are not very encouraging). If you have used it for that functionality as well I'm sure other users would be happy to hear your experiences.

Suggestion: hold on to your Rip Curl watch for surfing. The instinct solar is a very nice watch, but the 'surf'-part does not live up to what it promises. If you use it solely for surfing you might consider returning it (if still possible).

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hopefully somebody else can chime in with more positive feedback.

  • Thanks for the reply,

I had sold my Rip curl to get the garmin Instinct solar surf (due to price difference) because I practise many kind of water sports like windsurf, wingfoil, SUP and some other activities on land and my rip curl was perfect only during surf activity. The rip curl software is too close on surf and battery restrictive. So I bought with eyes closed the equivalent fonction from Garmin brand because I was sure that Garmin software will be better far away. It's not bad but really improvable and I hope it's coming. 450€ anyway...

I'm currently using the 16.41 version supposed to improve surf issue but I don't have testing during surf session yet (It's ski season). But when I will go surfing I will post my feedback.

I just see that a new beta version is release but nothing mention for tide data... I have also altimeter calibration issue so I will try this new version, hopefully fix it.

    Thx
