Instinct solar freezes

Hi,

Since the last update of the firmware (I have now version 11), my instinct solar keeps freezing up. Sometimes, the main watchface is hours behind the actual time and a click of a button "wakes it up" and it shows the correct time, but mostly I need to soft-reset it and of course lose everything that I did on that day.

This did not happen with earlier firmwares but now happens more and more... :-/

I did not set any "power saving mode" nor do I have set the "automated key lock" (I hope this is the right name for it, I am using a german UI).

It almost always happens over night. Two days ago, at 630 AM the display read 445 AM. Today at 755 AM it reads 230 AM (and BTW I did not wear the watch last night as it was charging...)

I was a very happy customer, but now I am really starting to lose confidence in the watch.

And yes, I have restarted the watch quite a few times ;-)

Anybody else experiencing similar issues?

Do I have to revert to a prior version of the firmware? And if so how do I do this and where do I get this firmware from?

*Any* help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers.

Pascal

  • And this morning again... Watchface shows 0:37 AM although it is already 6:54. Quickly pressing the up and down button and the time is now displayed correctly. But since 0:37 AM I obviously had no pulse (meaning that the sensors did not monitor anything) and my steps and stairs still show yesterday's value. After a while though these values are corrected and set to "0"

I still run version 11 as I don't know how to downgrade to a prior version...

I have now done a "factory reset". We'll see...

I really need help, here! )?

    Cheers!

  • same here, random watch face freeze. Sometimes during charging, sometimes at "watch only mode".

Pressing any button does however solve this problem. However that´s a new one!

    Latest official updates installed.

  • Hi,

After having reset the watch to "factory defaults" it worked for two days, and yesterday night it froze again...

    • It is 6:25 AM, Watchfase shows 0:30 AM
    • If can use the power button to turn the light on, but the light does not turn off automatically after 8 seconds. I have to turn if off manually by pressing the button again.
    • No other button works
    • I induce a "soft reset" by holding the power button for at least 15 seconds
    • "Soft Reset" is triggered and the watch is turned off.
    • I start the watch by pressing the power button once more.
    • Watch starts but still shows 0:30 AM.
    • Watch is now responsive and reacts to all buttons.
    • After a while, watch shows correct time.

So the issue is still there even after resetting the watch to "factory defaults". And it seems to always happen at night and regardless of whether or not I actually wear the watch...

Anyways, so I think I need to rollback to version 10.10 of the firmware...

Can I follow the steps described here: https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=14527#Instruct ?

Is this safe? Has anybody tried this? ?

  • So I just couldn't wait and followed the steps described in the link above:

    1. Download and unzip Instinct_***Beta.zip.
    2. Place the gupdate.gcd file, found in the System_v*** folder, into the \GARMIN folder of the device.
    3. If there is a BLE_ANT_SNS_v*** folder, place the gup3127.gcd file into the \GARMIN\RemoteSW folder of the device.
    4. Disconnect from your computer and proceed through the update.
    5. If you would like to revert to the last public release software, drop the gupdate.gcd file, found in the System_Backdate_v1010 folder, into the \GARMIN folder of the device.
    6. NOTE: If you revert to an older version of software, all of your settings will be reset to defaults.

I copied the file from the System_Backdate_v1010 into my device in \GARMIN but I have no idea how to "proceed through the update".

I have disconnected the watch after having copied the file, nothing happens. I have restarted the watch but nothing happens. No update is triggered and I still have version 11.00. But I noticed that the file I had copied is not there anymore...

So... Can anybody PLEASE explain how to rollback to 10.10 correctly?

    THANKS!

  • BTW:

I found an event-log on the garmin watch and found the following inside it:

    05? FF 00 00 00    0:00:04.886 HWM main 2020/10/27 23:09:07 C:45

    0B: FE 01 0E 00    1:08:30.775 HWM main 2020/10/28  6:46:23 V:0

There was a "Time Jump" and "Update Errors" between yesterday night 23:10 PM and this morning 5:39 AM. If you correct the time (I am in CET) you get roughly the issue I saw on the screen...

    @garmin: Does that help?

  • Same issue here after updating to 11.00 (eae425aa) a couple of weeks ago. Since then the "freeze" has happened 5 times, always at night while sleeping and is only resolved with a soft reset; holding CTRL for 10-15 seconds then powering back on.

  • FInally.... Someone is able to replicate... THANKS!

Even if there is still no solution, it helps knowing I am not crazy... Slight smile

@Garmin: You might want to inspect this issue... ;-)

  • The freezing with firmware v11 seems to take various forms. My Instinct (non-solar) froze once during the sleep. It woke up alone some minutes later, but was not able to connect to GC even after soft reset, and after diverse other manipulation either. Removing it from GC, and starting the re-paring from the Phone settings on the watch fixed it, in this case.

However, three other times the watch froze when on the charger, and nothing except of the Master Reset #2 helped bringing it back.

For the moment I would advise anyone not yet having the v11, to avoid updating (disable Auto Update on the watch Menu » Settings » System » Software Update). And those who have already v11, and experience the problems, do best reverting to the previous version.

  • Hi!

    Thanks for your answer.

And those who have already v11, and experience the problems, do best reverting to the previous version.

I already tried using the above described approach (see my previous postings) but was not able to revert to 10.10.
I did as described but nothing happened other than that the copied file was again removed from \Garmin in my watch. But it still ran with version 11.

Do you have hint on how to best perform reverting to 10.10? What might I have done wrong?

    Thanks!

  • Do you have hint on how to best perform reverting to 10.10? What might I have done wrong?

Not sure what you did excactly, but from your descritpion it looks like you executed all the points from 1 to 6 of the installation instruction, while you should be doing only the #5 for the roll-back. Also make sure there is sufficient room on the Instinct storage - clean up the Activity, Courses, and Workouts folders, to gain some more space.
