Fenix 7 Pro software 17.20 stable continuous crashes

I upgraded my Fenix 7 Pro to the stable version 17.20 via OTA tonight.
Subsequently, the device began to restart repeatedly, prompting for re-pairing with the mobile phone;
even after performing a hard reset and reinstalling the software.

Attempts to initiate the OTA update check also caused the Fenix to freeze, and it was not possible to shut down the device from the menu.
To revert to a stable state, I had to downgrade to version 16.22. Despite trying the OTA update once more, the issue persisted.
Consequently, I am currently constrained to remain on version 16.22.

Today I made another attempt with the same result, also avoiding reloading the backup and connecting it to the smartphone.
Seems "stable" only with wifi and bluetooth disabled.
I had to go back to 16.22 again disabling automatic updates.

  • I'm having the same reboot loop issue on my Tactix 7 pro. Does anyone know which 16.22 software version I should try to revert to, would it be the Fenix 7 pro or Fenix 7x pro?

  • I tried the following steps and it worked, I was able to see the USB mode and remove the img map files and the watch become normal:
    1. Connect the watch to PC
    2. Hold the Light button to power the watch off, while hold the Start button.
    3. Release Light button, the watch will automatically power on, keep holding the Start button.
    4. Check your PC if the watch can connect in USB mode.
    5. If you see it, quickly go into Garmin folder and remove recently updated img files, you can remove all as you wish.

This is able to resolve the map loading issue. The key is the watch must be connected to PC and recognized as USB mass storage, then you can remove img files.

  • Wow. This works. Can finally connect the watch to Garmin Express. Thanks!

  • Garmin engineers are still investigating concerns of crashing with the Public update version 17.20. There has been a BETA software release, version 17.22 that includes a fix for rebooting and crashing when starting activities. So, if you are experiencing this, you may consider enrolling in the BETA program.

If you are experiencing rebooting or crashing during other circumstances, we would love to collect the specifics of your experience. For this, please feel free to each out to me via Private Message.

  • I have the same issue with my Fenix 7x sapphire solar running 17.20.

Is it correct to assume that the rollout of 17.20 has been paused?

By the way, assuming that this issue is common, how the heck does this make it past Garmin QC???

Pleae do better, Garmin.  You have a huge crowd of people who desperately want to love you, but there are too many issues like this that sometimes make it really hard.

  • It is true, at this time Public Software update 17.20 has been paused.

  • We highlighted many issues during Beta testing for weeks now (since 16.22) but Garmin was not adressing many of them (broken DSW, broken Power Profiles etc.) luckily battery drain was solved but needed weeks for that issue!

I for myself dont get it how Garmin forced this unfinished and broken state to be released to public... Honestly I expected the stopping of the release - and no there is no QC on software level as you can see.

We tried to help and invested hours of bug trackong, logging, testing but were not really listened too and I guess it needs some eskalation on public/media/influencer level or some kind of real shitstorm to be taken seriously...

The software development is unfortunately getting worse by implementing new stuff while breaking existing ones and in my opinion way more important functions!

  • Just a question. I have updated to version 17.20 before ot was paused, hoping that it would help to solve some of the issues I have with my Epix Pro.

Since now I have not experienced any new issues.

Will those problems occur for all watches?

  • Go to system>about menu>hit top left light button 8 times>go to bottom and select Reninstall software. After this everything worked again for my Tactix 7 Amoled
