automatic nap detection

With the latest firmware I just had decent nap with fenix 7x pro watch on my wrist.

No nap was detected.

Is the nap automatically detected without any user action required or it only tracks when started with the widget?

this article https://www.garmin.com/en-US/garmin-technology/health-science/nap-detection/ and some other places mention "nap detection" so I am wondering if it is auto detected.

  • I wish we could manually start a nap! Mine is over-reading my naps on my Fenix 7s - I have a low resting heart rate and it's picking up "naps" incorrectly and telling me I'm napping while I'm at my desk working. Infinitely frustrating that there's no way to edit the nap or delete it and it's messing with my other stats :(

  • Interesting...I haven't gotten any naps automatically detected yet.

  • You can start Nap manually from naps widget, and unfortunately there is no option to delete wrongly registered nap.
Regarding autodetection, for me it works just fine, I also have low resting HR and mine Fenix 7 is able to recognise my naps or resting periods.

  • I know about the manual start...my resting HR is 50 buy that seems to not be low enough.

  • I have a low resting heart rate and it's picking up "naps" incorrectly and telling me I'm napping while I'm at my desk working.

    How low?

My RHR is mid-forties (averages 43)  yet I don't get, or have not noticed, any naps being registered incorrectly whether sitting at my desk or on the La-Z-Boy reading or watching TV. I literally have to go and lie-down to get a nap to record. I can get a deflection in the rathe of change of the Body Battery when I'm sitting down, but rarely a recording of a nap.

As I see it, it doesn't really matter whether to not a lap is recorded as long as the rest period is observed. The observation of a rest will reduce the rate of change of the Body Battery, possibly even enough to show a slight increase. Where it becomes a problem is if the rest period observed by the watch is sufficient to overwrite the previous night's sleep/

  • My resting also averages 43... Monday was a prime example of it incorrectly recording naps. 9:15-10:08am (sitting at my desk working), 12:02-12-22pm (again, working at my desk), 5:15-6:05pm (watching tv on the couch). Thus far it's only altered my sleep data once. I had an early 4:30am wake up, got up, had breakfast etc, run got cancelled so I went back to bed. Picked up a "nap" from 6:30am and deleted the previous night's sleep data telling me I only slept for the duration of the nap. For such an advanced device, I just find it silly you can't delete or alter the nap like you can alter sleep duration.

  • Picked up a "nap" from 6:30am and deleted the previous night's sleep data telling me I only slept for the duration of the nap

How long was the 'nap'? My understanding is that in general a 'nap' in excess of 3 hours will overwrite sleep data. There are always 'edge' cases. I think there's a discussion somewhere else about a nap replacing sleep data if recorded close to scheduled sleep time. Not sure how long the 'nap' was.

  • Using newest beta I can only start nap manually. I tried couple times to detect it automatic but even after 20 min sleep there was nothing. Also If I wake up, check morning report and go to sleep again this will be not counted anywhere.

  • Automatic detection now works perfectly with beta 16.13.
After lunch, "enjoyed" an unintentional nap of about 20 minutes. The watch recorded it perfectly.

  • I have the opposite problem. My Fenix 7 Pro detects naps when I haven't taken any - and sometimes even when I'm standing still working on something.
I like the nap detection, but can't find a way to delete "false" detections.
