Fenix 7 Base vs 955, are you kidding me?

Reducing the price is amazing, congrats to everyone that is able to score such a fantastic ecosystem and watch.

But now I feel duped buying the base Fenix 7.

The 955 is $200 less than the base Fenix 7.

The 955 basically has the same screen. [Not really a complaint I suppose, but I'm reaching for any sort of "upgrade" the $700 Fenix has over the $500 955)

The 955 has 2x as much memory, are you serious? The base Fenix 7 has 16gb and the 955 ($200 less!) has 32gb.

The 955 has multi-band the base Fenix 7 does not.

The memory and multi-band are the largest slaps in the face. The furthest stretch I can reach for is I paid $200 more for less memory in exchange for ~10 more hours of GPS time.

  • From day 1, I thought the 16GB storage and lack of dual-band was a weird decision for them to make, which is why I bought a Sapphire. I never understood why those things got left out on the lower models, it seemed like a bad deal to me even before the 955 came out. JMHO.

I agree with OP though, with the new 955 now out, I don't really see any reason to purchase a base model F7 anymore, unless someone particularly really needs the metal bezel and deeper waterproofing (at the cost of dual-band and more memory and $200 more) - I can't imagine that's a big market.

With the new 955, Garmin priced all but their Sapphire Fenix 7 models completely out of the market, which seems a strange decision only 4 months after they came out. But it is what it is.

Just remember, folks who bought the base F7 before: If it was worth it to you before, it should still be now, even if there's something new out that you like better. If it really bothers you, there's always the option to sell it and buy the 955.

  • Absolute love my Fenix 7 - but the new features in 955 makes me kinda jealous. Hope it will arrive for the fenix aswell

  • I’m pretty certain these features will come to the F7.  You sound like a brat .

  • Fenix 7 base is overpriced with 16Gb of storage and missing multiband GPS. Garmin played their marketing well by not announcing 955 sooner otherwise almost not many people would buy Fenix 7 base model.

I think that Garmin found out with Fenix 7 that pricing of their watched need to be corrected for models coming out later, which is reflected on 955 as well. They also learned that making unreasonable differences between models makes users dissatisfied (i.e. only 16gb of storage on Fenix 7 base model).

Also, it seems that they finally are making less software differences between some of the watches which is something that many users complained about (i.e. weird and never used sport modes are available but regularly used ones are not on some models).

What does it mean for us early adopters of Fenix 7 base model? We got owned by our childish impatience to have "new and the best" and bought a watch that we already thought was overpriced to start with. I learned my lesson.

  • Oh no, stop talking about F6. I'm glad I sold it. GPS was terrible, I should returned it.

  • To be honest - I feel fooled by Garmin. Some of you wrote that Fenix has sapphire glass or maybe even titanium case, but this is not really the case in this topic where base Fenix 7 is considered. Still materials and general looks of Fenix 7 can be good enough reason for buying it for someone, but for me functionality was the main goal, taking under consideration what I can really afford. Now it looks like for much less I could have more features, and still nice looking watch. And since release of Fenix 7 was not year or more ago but only around 4 mounts, I feel cheated. It's not that base Fenix 7 is not a good watch, but in terms of functionality 955 looks like better one, so If I could have here in my country some kind return or even exchange possibility I would not wait for a sec with decision. One additional pros for 955 is screen, which based on reviewers' opinion seems to be better. Probably technically it's the same screen, but backlight and colours looks better on 955.

  • Good question... I own a Tactix 7 and when I saw the first feature details of the FR955 I have became very furious . I feel myself fouled!

  • The 955 has 2x as much memory, are you serious? The base Fenix 7 has 16gb and the 955 ($200 less!) has 32gb.

I checked the Australian Garmin site and the base fenix 7 even 7S has 32GB

  • Maybe in some regions they have different memory specs or the Aus site is incorrect.
