My understanding always was that the best would be based on LTHR, but you need to run a test first to know your Threshold.
I would go for the LTHR zone...as Ocean5 suggest do the test
btw...bike or run...strava more likely to be bike
must read....
heart-rate-zones-which-should-i-use---resting-hr-or-lactate-thres…
you really do not need max hr when using LTHR
max hr you acquire once and then turn auto detection off
I would set your max hr to the average max hr value of those races
I would set your LTHR…
1. Deleted all values & zones in GC app + garmin web + fenix 5
2. I left just Profile info + Max HR based on 220 - age
3. Set only one zone 4 all sports based on Max HR (zones running + swimmind deleted)
4. Set all detection automatic (max HR, LT , aver HR at res)
5. done LT Test all worked perfectly! watsch set new zones based on LT everything back to normal...
The only srange thing is I get very Low '''LT 154 bpm at 4:53 m/km peace ''
ussulay i were around 168 bpm at 4:51 peace...
But let's move from here & see what's happen enxt...
sounds great! i think it will detect your max heartrate too. when you don't set it manually.
i would not care about the first value (same as the VO2max). and as i experienced you will not have to do the test again. run as normal. and when you run in higher heartrates, it corrects the LT automatically. also when you run a view times higher then your last recognized max HR it sets it to the new value. i only did the test once after a while as i got the watch. then once after i did a full reset.
great
after your hard work in searching this out, I would like to ask you a favour

Harsh :) ? no...
My garmin products since 2008 were so far:
- Forerunner 305, fenix 2, Fenix 3, 2 x Garmin vivosmart ) Fenix 5 (I'am buying today vivosmart 4 for my niece as well )
Products are generaly good & innovative with lots of features....
But always I had a trouble with a product or feature answer never came from Garmin but once again from other users on forum or internet.... SAV as well at least in France not very performing!
Someone from Garmin read this forum ? people asking for so, many thigns to be changed or added....
I believe web and app according to the concurence (training peaks, strava etc...) and today's webs & app possibilities schould evolve much more!
- give more flexibility to end user choosing what & how he want to see & compare regarding all metrics
I use max HR method. I share a Google sheet about that. Feel free to use it :
- in french
- in english
Not Baf Freddy ! thanks!
If everything will work fine on my F5 now... I Mean automatic updates of HR Max , av HR, Vo2 & LT I'll stay with my LT automaticly set zones as worked perfectly for last 10 years... But your sheet is very well done to set the race or intervals peace or to compare to proposed by Garmin detection :)
