Buying a Fenix 5X in Qatar - the traps I need to avoid / should I avoid

Hi guys and gals

I posted recently regarding the Fenix 5X vs the 935 and received some excellent replies which have enabled me to make a decision, thanks for those much appreciated.

The issue of maps was raised and which version i needed to buy.

I imagine the watch, if I buy in Qatar will be Asia or Middle east if Middle East is available.

I would raise these questions with Garmin but I find them almost impossible to get hold of unless I ring them which I am loathe to do as it will potentially cost me more than the watch.

Has anyone bought a 5X in the middle east and can tell me what sort of issues are potentially going to arise.

If I read the forums coreectly I believe there may be a "base map" pre installed which I have no choice but to run with and cannot change. I am able however able to download maps for use, igorning the basemap completely.

I am concerned regarding wifi in case the wifi used is different, I dont think so but if it turns out to be this is a big issue if wifi turns out not to work back in the uk.

Does anyone know the answers to these questions and whether there are any other traps I need to avoid falling into. If these sort of things are discussed widely I am happy to follow any links you guys and gals may have.

Clearly I can buy in the UK and have it shipped here or wait until I get home for xmas. Black Friday might (fingers crossed) present some bargains that I am unable to refuse.

Your help will again be appreciated.

Regards

Brian

  • The apac units don't get the same fw updates as the units for the rest of the world, they get a special fw update and this is weeks later as for the other units...(but I think with the same adds and issue corrections).

You don't get preinstalled european maps with an apac version, but you can of course download free european osm maps

Hola, Volker. Podrías hacer una comparativa entre Garmín Fenix 5X y el Garmín Epix? Lo que te gusta de cada reloj y las diferencias que encuentras? Saludos
  • Hola taberita,

wrong thread but still a short answer:

the epix is a good watch for outdoor navigation with maps- but is has still (a lot of ) bugs, which will be not fixed anymore, because garmin canceled fw updates a while ago. If you can arrange with the existing bugs, it is a good watch (and you can buy the epix cheap now). For me, the better choise is the fenix 5x. But listing everything here is too complex.Garmin has learned from issues made with epix and suggestions for improvement were taken up in the 5x (fw). The 5x is still supported with fw updates.

    Saludos
