F5X and Stryd

I just started to use Stryd (instead of garmin foot pod) and here are some thoughts and observation.

1. I paired Stryd with F5x as footpod and set speed and distance to "always" and calibration to "off". So was recommended by fellrnr.com.
2. I ran on previously measured tracks (markers every 100meters)
3. I ran 100m, 200m, 400m at a pace 3:00 3:30 4:00 5:00 (each distance with each pace)
4. I checked the distance measured by Stryd at the end of every run.
5. I had a common stopwatch to calculate pace after each run by hand.
6. I did some "sequence runs" 100m@3:00 - 100m@5:00 - 400m@3:30 - 400m@5:00 using the lap button.

So:

1. It is incredible piece of hardware and software (I don't know which part do the job).
2. The biggest difference between measured distance and what Stryd provided was 2 meters! Regardless the pace!
3. Stryd constantly show the pace. There are no delays.
4. Garmin footpod calibrated to 5:00 "improved" its pace at 3:00 (sometimes by 10 percent). Stryd didn't. The pace was almost the same as calculated by hand.
5. I didn't care about watts. I simply do not understand that.
6. Stryd webpage (powercenter) is even worse than Garmin.

At the end I ran 5km track (measured and marked by people from parkrun). The track is located in a forest and completely covered by trees. It is a circle with 4 bends. Usually F5X (and F3) showed 4.6 - 4.8 km and you could clearly see on the map that bends were cut (shortened). With Stryd the map looked the same however the distance was 5.04 km which is impressing.

I know that the methodology was unprofessional but pretty accurate to check my needs. For me Stryd will be used as a primary source of pace and distance for sprints, intervals and tempo runs when you often change the pace. Otherwise (long runs, trails) I can run without it.

Regards,
W

    Hi!
    I had the today.
    1st run w/ Stryd and the 5X

Set Pace and Distance to foot pod (always) and autocalibration to off.
Compared w/ a previous (not measured) run: a difference of about 150m on a 10.5km run.

Will go on the track tomorrow and do the CP test. Wil report back the results in regards to the distance.

I have to fully agree to your "1. It is incredible piece of hardware and software (I don't know which part do the job)."

oh, and btw... I created a GC-Group for Stryd runners: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/group/2218013
  • what the methodology for auto calibration off?

I dont have a stryd, but have been thinking about it. One thing touted about it, is how you dont have the calibration issue that many have with the Garmin FP. So i was little surprised to see a few of you leave autocalibration off. Why is that?

I have no idea why but if you read advices from fellrnr.com and similar pro and semi-pro web pages then they tell you to switch it off. Perhaps Stryd do it by it self so Garmin Watch should not.

The accuracy of non-calibrated Stryd is here: http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Stryd

BTW, I had another 2 runs. Still same conclusions - extremely accurate.

  • Good morning, I use stryd footpod with F5 too. Autocalibration is set to off because stryd is a lot more precise than GPS. I use a calibration factor of 100.8. Precision on distance calculation is impressive, and pace too. I love it!

Stryd with a 935, mountain trail, calibration .942, Stryd raw distance consistently 15.1km. Power and pace relationship is very interesting, starting to pick it up on the flatter sections. GPS can be a bit like a Jane Austen novel, after a lot of twists it turns out alright in the end.

Basic rule in calibration method: use an instrument that has at list 10 times better accuracy than your specimen.
If you set auto calibration to on, then you allow the watch to change the cal factor to match the GPS accuracy which is much inferior to Stryd.
100 factor is very accurate. But if you want better accuracy, then you can calibrate it at a 400m track by calculating the new cal factor. Mine is set to 99,8.

I also use the factor 100 w/ auto cal set to off.
Speed and Distance from Footpod (stryd). Was on the track and the 400m on the watch matched exactly the white line there.
    Was runnung on lane 1
