Fenix 5 sync fails

Just bought a Fenix 5 Sapphire, in Taipei (so, the APAC model, I guess. Wish I realized that before purchasing. I'm living here for an extended period of time, but from the US).

I installed Garmin Connect on my android device (HTC M8).

After walking through the set up process in Connect at least three times (why did it ask my my height/weight, etc. on both the phone and the watch?), it still fails on sync every time I go past the ""Almost Done! ... When you're ready to see what a sync looks like, tap Next." screen by tapping Next.
That is to say, I get stuck on the "Syncing now" screen of the setup process in Connect.

Just as I started writing this post, I saw a notice at the bottom of the cell phone screen indicating that a sync was in progress. I didn't do anything to trigger this. Of course, it was still on the "Click Next to sync" page after the sync completed, and now I still can't get past that point.

Each time it fails and I leave the app, when I return, I start from "Set your profile picture" again. (It retains my data from the first time, except the Do Not Disturb yes/no selection.)

Am I doing something wrong? It shouldn't be this hard.
