Fenix 5 - HR broadcast problem

I own Fenix 5 Sapphire and Garmin Edge 1000 - both top of the line Garmin devices... One of the use cases I bought Fenix 5 for is to use it as HR broadcast device during bike rides (cause I do not like using HR belt). Till now - it is total failure. I manage to pair the Fenix 5 to Edge 1000 and HR sensor without major problems. However when I start the ride - the Edge 1000 stops to see HR signal after dozens of second. Watch sits on my left hand (and I can see it measures the heart rate and is in transmit mode). Edge is on handlebar - about 30-40cm from it. At the same time Edge keeps connection to ANT based speed and cadence sensors without any problems.

Does anyone experiences same problems with HR broadcast?

This is really disappointing - given the price of the device. Separately (wrote about this in separate thread) I experience very week and unstable Bluetooth connection - sadly I see a pattern here...

  • Yes, I experienced exactly the same issue today. I put the F5 into broadcast mode and looking at the activity it only staid connected to my edge 1000 for around 1:45s.

  • Given that it works fine about 1 minute - it gives me hope that this is SW bug. I think we need to somehow formally raise it to Garmin - not sure what is the proper channel.
Too bad we have same Garmin behavior as with F3 release - technologically advanced product, but not properly tested. Which means bugs, bugs, bugs - at least for first few months. Seems this is the price we pay for being early technology adopters.

As I only noticed this with the beta 2.72 i've reported it via [email protected].

It wouldn't hurt if you did the same for your circumstances.
  • Not a problem with the in activity HR broadcast mode, just in 'normal' HR broadcast

I've quickly tested this recording a mock indoor bike activity with the F3 using HR broadcast from F5 set first to normal broadcast and then using the next option for broadcast in activity. It seems the in activity option does not cut out.

'Normal' HR broadcast from F5 recorded on F3 cuts out https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1656806927

'In Activity' HR broadcast from F5 https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1656830006 recorded on F3 https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1656829885 works fine

    Hello bgrenda.

I own a Garmin Edge 1000 (SW 14.20) and a Fenix 5 Sapphire edition and I have experienced exactly the same issue. I upgraded my F5 SW ver to 6.00 so I hope it would solve this issue. Further testing in tomorrow's ride.

    Cheers

I have the same issue (broadcasting hr for more than a few minutes to garmin edge 1000) with vivoactive 3. I returned watch today and replacement does the same thing.

I have Fenix 5s and Edge 1030, i start the broadcast and see HR on the edge but after the ride uploading to Strava does not include the HR only my ride.
I have also Vivoactive HR and Edge 520 and everythings work perfectly there.

As per Crispin's response above, if you use the activity mode, it should keep broadcasting.
  • I also have the same issue, that is, the HR broadcast is stopped after a few minutes on Edge 820 though the connectivity between F5 and 820 is continued.
Yes, I have no problem with the in activity HR broadcast mode.
However, I would like to use the normal HR broadcast mode.

I also hope it would solve this issue.
