Can F5 send out HRM signals via Bluetooth Smart to Android Endomondo/Strava ?

Fenix 5 has incorporated BLE (Bluetooth Smart) to receive HRM signals from belts etc.
But can I use its inbuilt HRM to transmit live to my Android Strava/Endomondo/Runtastic ?
Just like any typical HRM watch like Fitbit, Mio or similar.
I mount the phone on my bike stem, would like live HRM fed to it.

Would appreciate any owner can enlighten me.

Thanks
  • I believe the F5 supports live tracking http://www8.garmin.com/livetrack/ so just start that and people will be able to see HR data on the Garmin site. With this sort of functionality I am not sure they will enable it on 3rd apps (although they did announce Strava Live Beacon support so maybe...)

  • If it's like other garmin watches with WHR, you can have it brountcast the HRM data (ANT+) and pair it with something else that expects a HRM (ant+). For example, with the va-hr, I'll turn on the broadcast and have it paired with my Edge, as can see the data on the edge.

The manual for the f5 should have some details, and if it can broadcast the HRM in BLE too, or just ANT+
  • Ok, so it looks like it can broadcast ANT+ but not BLE.

Thanks for this update. I had a good look at manual, it doesn't indicate transmission of HRM via both Ant+ nor BLE (preferred).
Its not preferable to broadcast to website and back to Android.

One would prefer such a premium watch to have some transmission feature, as opposed to being a standalone machine.

Hope we uncover the answer soon.
  • Page 5 of the manual states:

Broadcasting Heart Rate Data to Garmin Devices
You can broadcast your heart rate data from your fēnix 5/5S device and view it on paired Garmin devices. For example, you can broadcast your heart rate data to an Edge® device while cycling, or to a VIRB® action camera during an activity.
NOTE: Broadcasting heart rate data decreases battery life.
1 From the heart rate widget, hold MENU.
    2 SelectOptions.
    3 Select an option:
    • Select Broadcast Heart Rate to start broadcasting heart rate data now.
    • Select Broadcast During Activity to broadcast heart rate during timed activities (Starting an Activity, page 2).
The fēnix 5/5S device starts broadcasting your heart rate data, and appears.
NOTE: You can view only the heart rate widget while broadcasting heart rate data.
4 Pair your fēnix 5/5S device with your Garmin ANT+ compatible device.

I know that refers to pairing it with another Garmin device, but as that connection would use the standard ANT+ protocol then you may be able to pair it (as an HRM) with another ANT+ head.

Your answer is very clear. Thanks so much.
  • Thank you so much for this information, i didnt know the watch was capable of doing that, i am gonna use it with pulsometer rr that has a bigger pulsrate view on the phone and can rotate. have very bad eyes so can see anything when in garmin connect
  • I use the functionality every other day. I broadcast my HR to an Edge 520 when cycling. This not only allows all the HRM to be displayed on the 520 with cadence, speed, etc while riding but also, the HRM data is included in the workout when uploaded to GC, MapMyRun and Strava.
