What am I supposed to see with the topo maps included ?

This is what I got see yesterday while out of roads / paths. It looks like any other GPS without topo maps. Am I doing something wrong?

1) Is it the standard map in the watch? (I guess so, and then that is what you get, if not downtown a city)

You could also install Garmin Basecamp - and import your map from the watch. Then you will be able to see how "detailed" your map is.

The OpenTopoMaps come with seperate contour line maps. If you activate them together with the Garmin Maps, you see both.

4) What kind of map would you expect?

Lastly when I travel to new regions - where the standard topo map is bad (like the one you showed above), i would download a free map from this site:

Anyway, I will retry just in case and also try that BaseCamp idea, thanks for the tips.

Maybe you should just zoom out to see more! If you are missing contour lines, you could use a separate contour map in combination with Garmin maps. I use them from Opentopomaps, works great!

After some more tests and information search, seems the Europe maps doesn't include the contour lines, and they have no info about hiking routes that is not covered by OpenTopoMaps on my area. I expected to get somehting at least on pair with free maps. Pretty disappointing.

In the areas I used the Garmin maps so far (several wooden areas in middle and northern Germany and a run in UK) there is really every single path on the maps and I can see no difference to other OSMs, maybe this depends on the region. Overall the OSM-quality is extremely good in the areas I am normally running and cycling.
