I thought we will have installed the maps from our region, thus, Spain=Europe (East/West), but i have all of these regions "installed" (??), see image.

If i right-click i have the option to Install all of theme: i don't understand this since i already have installed them, in fact Basecamp took these from the watch...??

SO could be anyone explain the behviour behind the Topo, Course...maps??

Thank you, ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1376160.png
  • I'm not clear what you're asking here? BaseCamp is simply asking if you want to install maps, what issue do you have with that?

Note also that BaseCamp cannot take maps from your device, all it can do is read the maps on it.

That's my question, i really don't know how many maps i have installed, since you can see those 5 items and in the watch i only see 3 items, maybe the other 3 are for the "Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR" (whats the meaning of DEM, NR...??).

If i have already installed those maps (are installed) why i have the option in Basecamp to "install maps on Fenix 5"??

    Thanks,
  • You have the option because everyone does. When you click on it IF you have maps that BaseCamp can install to your device you'll be offered them. Note that BaseCamp can only offer them if you've previously installed them into your PC for BaseCamp to use.

The DEM map is the worldwide Digital Elevation Map.

If you want to see exactly what is on your device use JaVaWa device manager http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

Thank youtrying the JaVaWa, but it tells me "No manageable Garmin devices or SD cards detected", though it is recognised in Win explorer and BaseCamp....
  • Ah sorry, don't think it can deal with your device.

Garmin create a LOT of confusion in this area, with misleading file endings and lacking information. Here is a table I made for my non-plus Fenix 5X bought in Sweden July 2017 (showing state just before a complicated map update this year):

_WatchName_ _FileName - ca FileSize_ _Garmin Express Name_

*REAL MAPS and a DEM (Digital Elevation Model)*

Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR gmapbmap.img 49 MB 'NONAME not-shown'
TopoActive Europe v4 West gmapprom.img 3432 MB Western Europe 4.0
TopoActive Europe v4 East gmapprom1.img 2354 MB Eastern Europe 4.0
Garmin Cycle Map EU, 2017.10 gmapcycle.img 3213 MB 'Swedish equiv...'

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    *GOLF DATA*

'NONAME not-shown' gmapsup1.img 29 MB Coverage of North and South America 5.60
'NONAME not-shown' gmapsup2.img 15 MB Coverage of Europe, Middle East & Africa 5.2
    'NONAME not-shown' gmapsup3.img 14 MB Coverage of Pacific 4,70

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*TIME ZONE DATA* This is Garmin's TimeZoneMap v19.00 from Nov 2016

    'NONAME not-shown' gmaptz.img 1 MB 'NONAME not-shown'

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    *'COPY PROTECTION'/'CHECK SUM' Files*

'NONAME not-shown' *.gma *.unl *.sum 'NONAME not-shown'

If you don't use the Garmin maps, which are large and very processor 'heavy', you can even turn off the "Worldwide DEM Basemap" (basically a skeleton map with elevations and a few main roads); provided the map you use has elevation information of course, which most based on OpenStreetMap (OSM) do. I find a small map of Sweden from http://frikart.no and some extra contour lines from http://garmin.opentopomap.org to be pleasing (just the sweden_contours.img file from the sweden_garmin.zip there).

The complicated map update I mentioned above was marked simply as "Garmin Cycle Map EU 2018.10" in Garmin Express, but turned out to be just the 'package' name for 3 very large files. I was first forced to make 16 GB of free space on the computer - a Virtual Machine running Win7 under a Linux OS. Then Garmin forced me to delete the non-Garmin maps from the 'Fenix 5X'. The update would not fit otherwise... I used a USB stick with a copy of the watch Garmin directory instead of operating directly with the slow watch filesystem.

Here's what finally installed on the 'watch/USB' stick (new files were D4713060C.img, gmapcycle.img and D6019000A.img):

_WatchName_ _FileName - ca FileSize_ _Garmin Express Name_

*REAL MAPS and DEMs (Digital Elevation Models)*

Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR gmapbmap.img 49 MB 'NONAME not-shown'
TopoActive Europe v4 West gmapprom.img 3432 MB Western Europe 4.0
TopoActive Europe v4 East gmapprom1.img 2354 MB Eastern Europe 4.0
Garmin DEM Map EU 2017.20 D4713060C.img 920 MB 'NONAME not-shown'
Garmin Cycle Map EU, North East, 2018.10 gmapcycle.img 3694 MB 'Swedish equiv'
Garmin Cycle Map EU, South West, 2018.10 D6019000A.img 3268 MB 'Ibid'

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    *GOLF DATA*

'NONAME not-shown' gmapsup1.img 29 MB Coverage of North and South America 5.70
'NONAME not-shown' gmapsup2.img 15 MB Coverage of Europe, Middle East & Africa 5.30
    'NONAME not-shown' gmapsup3.img 13 MB Coverage of Pacific 4,80

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*TIME ZONE DATA* This is Garmin's TimeZoneMap v21.00 from Feb 2018

    'NONAME not-shown' gmaptz.img 1 MB 'NONAME not-shown'

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    *'COPY PROTECTION'/'CHECK SUM' Files*

'NONAME not-shown' *.gma *.unl *.sum 'NONAME not-shown'

Having copied these new files to the real watch - with their corresponding .gma and .unl files - (the copying took hours from what I recall), I decided to erase D6019000A.img (but not the .gma and .unl) to make space for own maps.

Testing the 'Garmin Cycle Map' 2018.10 and using the 'Garmin DEM Map EU' I saw no difference to the older 2017.10 in my area. I _suspect_ the large sizes of these new maps are due to 'Popularity Routing' data, of which my older watch makes no use! So just bloat on anything prior to a Fenix 5 Plus or some Edge device.
