Navigating a course and deviating

I am a long time Fenix and now Epix user and, when exploring long hikes, find it really useful to sketch out a GPX and then transfer it to the watch.

The problem is, if I have to take a detour (the online route is not viable, a path is closed etc), this basically screws the entire process. The watch continually tries to navigate you back to a point it thinks you have "missed". Yesterday I went on a 4 hour hike and, because I left the car park via a different route to the one I originally sketched out on the gpx, for nearly the entire 4 hrs the watch was trying to route me back to the car park so I could "exit it the planned way". This means no alerts, no climb pro etc for the entire hike.

There doesn't seem to be any way to force the watch to "snap to" the route where you are and to ignore anything that you might have "missed" earlier.

Does anyone have a workaround?
Perhaps stopping navigating and starting again (but I think the watch would still try and direct you to the original start point)?

Hm, if you use "follow course" instead of "follow map" it should not reroute. After you got to your route, it should only display "course found" and start showing distance to next direction change. I use this for all my trail runs. If I leave my route, it only shows "off course"

Hi - do you mean, Navigation, select the Course, BUT then select MAP instead of DO COURSE?? Many thanks for trying to help

No. In your activity settings under "routing", you can select the method its routing you. There is "follow course" and use map. try "follow course".

(don't know the exact English menu titles)

Hi. It is already set to Follow Course. I think that's the problem?

You can try "use map". But then the watch will calculate the route on its own with the paths it finds on its own map. If you planned a path that's not on the map, the watch will not guide you this way. You will have a deviation from your planned course. I only use this for road cycling.

Strange that it's working for me with "follow course" and not for you.

Hi Michael, many thanks. did you understand the issue I described? it feels to me like its the watch rigidly trying to stick to having me walk over every data point in the loaded course......I understand what you say about the "use map" option and am sure you are right. You don't ever see the issue I describe?

Not yet. But maybe, now that you mentioned the "data point", even if I left my course because I missed to turn the right way, I usually run back the wrong way and then back on course. Thats maybe I'm not affected by this because I do get the set waypoint.

Ahh....my issue is when I CANNOT (or elect not to) follow every datapoint eg path closed or I spot a clearly better path

I haven't had a chance to test this and Garmin "tech support" have been appalling (to the point where I have considered again dumping Garmin) BUT I think the workaround is to select "Use Map" rather than "Follow Course" - I "think" this means the watch will try to navigate you around your course data points but will be continually adjusting its directions if you miss a data point rather than rigidly directing you to each and every data point (even if some turn out to be inaccessible for example)
