Do all Marqs have the washed out backlight?

I am sure you all know what I am talking about.  This is an issue that has been all over the Fenix 6 line of watches since launch.  Thankfully at some point Garmin seemed to use another manufacture (at least for the 6 and 6x) tho, I have not yet seen any 6s watches without the bad washed out screens.  I mention this, as the screen on all Marqs are the same as the 6s.

So, I am wondering.. are Marqs that have been recently manufactured been updated with the new screen that is not washed out when the backlight is on?  Or.. is this still present on all Marqs?

Thanks!

  • Depends on what you mean by 'washed out'? My Adventurer gets a slightly blue/milky tone with the backlight on. I wouldn't say it's ideal but it's by no means an issue.

  • I can't see my Expedition is bad in the look of the watchface.

For (much) better battery life none of the Garmin watches does use an LED screen what Samsung does. Those look much brighter but you have to charge them latest every second day ... but this not what you mean, do you?!

  • Yes, this is what I mean :-)  I know it's not the end of the world, its just that Garmin has updated the screen since.. and now the recent Fenix watches have a MUCH better display contrast (when backlight is on).  The difference is significant.  *lots of topics on this in the Fenix forums, with photos etc).   It appears that the Marqs, may not have this update as all the ones on display in the stores are all like that too.  But, when you hold it next to a recent F6.. wow.. its a big difference.

So, its one of those things.. "If I buy a new watch, obviously I would like the best possible / recent display tech".

My Fenix 6s had this blueish washout look when backlight is on as well.  I think this is identical to what the Marqs are as well, as its the same screen used.  But, I was just wondering is anyone has bought a Marq recently, and can confirm :-)

  • You are correct, this is not what I was referencing.  :-)  I have had a lot of Garmin watches.. I understand the display.  Its the backlight issue on the Fenix 6, which I think is the same on the Marq as well.   What I am looking for is someone who has bought a Marq in the last few months to comment to see if it has been updated, like the F6 has...

  • SO, I went and actually bought the Aviator today.. hoping it would be updated with the nicer backlight.  I was wrong.  It is very washed out compared to the Fenix :-(  Not only that, I noticed that its really hard to even see during the day, because of the domed sapphire.  The viewing angle is MUCH less on this watch vs. the fenix with the flat sapphire.  Something I did not expect, until I owned it myself.    So.. sadly going back to the store today..  I guess the F6 is really it (for now).

  • MARQ models have Sapphire as a glass and Fenix 6 models have Gorilla Glass DX unless they are Sapphire model. Sapphire is kinda bad at transmitting light and gives a kinda blue tint due to coating on it. However, GGDX is made to transmit more light than previous glasses and Sapphire may not reach that level. So I think if you need to see the display better, just prefer the non sapphire Fenix models. I've used all and haven't had an issue in none of them. But the bezels are different story, they're much easier to scratch than the glass.

  • Hey thanks for the reply..  But, what I mean is that the Marq sapphire is worse viewing angle vs. the Fenix Sapphire 6.  I have them both :-)  I understand already about sapphire vs non..  what I was saying (and is interesting) is that the Marqs have a CURVED sapphire vs a FLAT sapphire (like the Fenix) and this is what also makes a big difference.  Unfortunately a curved sapphire is not as great when viewing at a sharp angle, or in dynamic lighting conditions ... i.e. it is WORSE then the flat Sapphire found on the fenix.   Thats all :-)

  • The funny thing is that a curved sapphire probably costs considerably more to make :)

  • Oh for sure!  I have many regular watches in my collection and many have the domed sapphire.  My Omega Seamaster is a good example.  It's beautiful.  It works well on a regular watch, but on the Garmin's it is not playing well with the LCD screen as it effects the way light comes in and out of it.   Its the last thing I would have thought of before buying a Marq too.  I never would have thought.  In fact, if it was not for the fact that I had already owned a Sapphire Fenix 6, I would have assumed that all Garmins are the same and would have been disappointed with all of them.   They really do need to make them all flat :-)

  • Hi guys. I can confirm. Bluish display on Marq Captain. I have returned. Currently still using Garmin Quatix 6 Pro. Both sapphire and titanium. But compared two backlighted displays makes huge difference. Please see and consider
