MARQ Expedition initial impressions

Right- finally got my MARQ Expedition yesterday. Didn't get to play with it much but unboxed the watch and did the set up.

Having owned a few time pieces from top watchmakers, I have to say that the packaging was most excellent. The build quality of the watch is top notch, loved the leather band.

The additional rubber band is quite nice as well and I like it better than that of my former F5 Plus.

I got around to doing a few short runs today, in spite of the yellow wind warning in London today and staying up until 04.00.

Dislikes:
-the watch restarted, when I attempted launch POI navigation- clearly work left to be stability wise
-had issues with my Jabra Elite Active 65t- Spotify worked fine until I started an activity, which immediately resulted in music cutting out
-(temporary) lack of app support, including Stryd; used another data field but no power metrics got recorded on GC or Strava

Neutral:
-briefly tested the "around me" nav function--took its sweet time to produce results; so did opening the map

EDIT:
Stryd metrics are successfully displayed on GC now that the Stryd datafield supports the MARQ series

I had no audio cutouts with a cheap pair of Anker earphones. Will contact Jabra to ask why their fully wireless 65t Active product that costs 8 times as much doesn't work as well

On these two points, please tell the Stryd team that you would like them to enable their app for the watch. They'll have to be the ones to do it. Also for Nav functions, the processor difference between say a bike computer and a watch is rather large. Calculating nav on a watch isn't going to be a speedy process the way it works today. I would love to see Garmin hand some of this calculation off to your phone if it is in range to speed up the process. The other solution, to throw processing power at it, is what you see on the new 530 and 830 bike computers. Sadly a watch form factor won't work with a process that requires that sort of power budget.

POI is useful for when I don't have my phone with me in a strange place, but almost every other instance I've played with it i'd be better served with "Ok Google, navigate to Starbucks"

Hopefully I'll share some Expedition runs soon.

One other note, if you do get a crash, check the debug folder. I bet there will be some log files in there that the outdoor software team would love to see. The best way to contact them may be to use the fenix 5 beta email address [email protected] until they post something different in these forums. Just make sure the subject line of your email clearly calls out MARQ.

  • Garmin also need to update their own running power CIQ field to be compatible with the MARQ range!
  • I wrote on Stryd's facebook page and the Stryd datafield was updated to work on the MARQ series of watches on the day. Well impressed.
They said that the rest of their Connect apps are to follow.
  • Well...GPS track status seems not very impressive unfortunately. I expected better results.
  • Seems similar to the Suunto 9 I have used in the same area. It's already better than my old Fenix 5 Plus too
  • I' m patiently waiting to replace my 3 years old F3 HR with MARQ Athlete/ Expedition or upcoming F6. I have still very brilliant GPS track signal compared to above one (tested in London or Tokyo downtown or wherever in the world). Small differences are not absolute dealbreaker for me, just feel pity to replace old Fenix with much expansiver machine without improving GPS reception. I would appreciate your further experiences shared with us and of course let' s waith for Ray' s review.
  • If you run with the music player, the activity on GC will show you played song in the right pane after sync.
  • About stability: what is the version number was out of the box? Have you applied update via Express, what is it number?
