Turn by turn navigation

Certainly, I was using turn by turn navigation conveniently when I ride a bicycle with version 5.70.

But from a certain time, the turn by turn navigation was disenabled.

Now, I can see only the distance to the goal with navigation.

Is there any option to use turn by turn navigation?

  • I must admit that it works pretty well. I use locus, plan my route/course here and than in route planner, if I recalculate all include navigation hints it works. It adds navigation hints along my path. Then, you have to export it to gpx and import through Garmin connect, send to watch, etc. Navigation  hints are the same as on locus. I tested it yesterday on 17km hike, its useful help on route. And hints still did appears if there is data field switched off. It shows when it's needed, you just don't see it previously. I'm on latest beta.

  • At least in my case, the course needs to be created using Connect (the website, in my case). No TBT for any course created using Explore or Basecamp. I guess, in general no TBT for any course directly downloaded from third-party websites / software / apps (you need first to import that course to Connect and, from Connect, to Instinct).

    My suggestion.

    1) Upgrade to v6.60

    2) Create a basic test course (include at least a 90° turn) using Connect, upload it to the Instinct and test if it works (it should)

  • 1) Upgrade to v6.60

I thought this thread theme is that it does not work in 6.60 ..? But

    working on firmware 6.60

    2) Create a basic test course (include at least a 90° turn) using Connect

What do you mean "using Connect"? I use courses generated by web connect.garmin.com, and I download the .fit file by USB cable. I have tested it with Instinct firmware versions 5.70, 6.60, 6.91

So I still do not know what is wrong, if firmware version, watch settings or content of the .fit course file...

  • Thank you for your advice. I will inquire to Outdoor Product Support about this issue.

  • Somewhere above there is a post from Garmin saying that the issue has been solved for courses created using Connect.

Indeed, at least for me, TBT navigation works with connect in that way.

    V6.60.

    1) Create a course from web connect (Training - Course - Create course - Personalized & Trail running - Free hands). Note that you need at least one sharp turn in the course.

    2) Open Connect app.  Training - Course - select the course created on web connect - Send to device.

  • I have no smartphone with connect  app. Does it matter? Is there any difference when I create the course directly on the web connect.garmin.com using web browser?

Create a course from web connect (Training - Course - Create course - Personalized

I am confused. Are we talking about this web?

I do not see there any "Personalized"...

  • Just select one activity, like trail running. When that menu is closed, you should see the following (in Italian, in my case):

"Personalizza" in Italian, I don't know exactly how it is translated in English.

    Then, press Continue.

As for the second question, well, I had never done this before but I'm trying right now to help you. So, USB connection between my computer and the Instinct. Then I turn on Express, and I check that the Instinct is connected. I create a sample course on Connect (Web). Once I have done that, I press "send to device". A pop-up menu turns on, asking me if I want to open the link with Express. I press OK. It syncs. I disconnect the watch from the computer. I find the new course in my Instinct, and indeed it works (at least for me).

  • O.K. ("Personalizza" is "Custom" in English version :-)

Could you please try it without Express? (I do not have even Express, it does not work on my system)

I just use Download (FIT) to \Garmin\Courses  directory.

  • In my opinion, the problem still remains or the specification of the watch is misleading. Because there is no TBT navigation for activities saved on the watch ... Do the courses loaded only by Garmin Connect support TBT? Is that the case with other Garmin devices?

  • Now it is clear to me that TBT navigation use directions saved in the .fit file.
App Connect on Android or Garmin Express in Windows does not download a .fit file from connect.garmin.com as prepared file, but recreates it with TBT directions.
When I download .fit file directly from connect.garmin.com (using a web browser) to \GARMIN\Courses , such .fit file does not contain any TBT directions. If I download .gpx file to \GARMIN\NewFiles , the Instinct creates .fit from it and move it to \GARMIN\Courses , but again without TBT directions.

I just discovered for myself web www.plotaroute.com/routeplanner , where I can create my own TBT directions in route and let generate .fit file which I can download directly to \GARMIN\Courses . Nice!
