Today I racked up 61 floors... on a route with approximately five floors.

Sometimes I've seen wacky floor counts out by as much as ten floors (as compared to previous measurement of the routes, and my phone's own readings), but today my Instinct decided I'd walked 61 floors on a route that usually reads around five floors. I thought between GPS+Galileo, 3D movement, and the altimeter, surely there should never be such a massive error in reading floors? I guess not... :-(

  • Strange that it happens only to you, and not to others. Could be also a faulty unit. At least myself, I have no significant problems with the Instinct altimeter. Could you post a link to one of your activities, that we could have a look at your elevation profile, and the way it is recorded? Did you already try the latest beta version of the Istinct firmaware, to see whether it helps?

  • Except it doesn't only happen to me, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd0AY_nJfUE

Not to mention all the posts here and elsewhere, easily Googled.

And software can't fix an incredibly obvious hardware flaw. Only good sense and product testing can do that.

  • So the watch worked ok for a while, I assume, and then got weird. What changed? Not your arm I think :) Maybe simplest solution is true and sensor broke. Then I would try to get replacement unit.

  • obvious hardware flaw

Does not seem to be so obvious to me, since it apparently works all right minimally in my own case (an probably for most others as well). Couple of complaints on a public forum does not necessarily mean an obvious flaw. I guess there would be many more complaints if there were really a systematic flow. This is why I asked if you could share some activities links, so that we can try investigating it and localizing the problem.

  • Have you tried searching this very forum and more widely on google? You may wish to.

Also - it's pretty obvious using good sense that the port location is a going to be a problem for people who sweat a lot/use stuff like sunscreen/etc. I cannot imagine why it's a surprise.

Oh, and Garmin support over the phone also acknowledge the issue. The last person I spoke to even finished my own words as I began describing the issue. They knew exactly what I meant, and went on to suggest watches of theirs with comparable features and the port on the side. I was pleased they knew about it and were trying to be helpful. I was less thrilled that their suggested models were all a lot more expensive than the Instinct.

Yes, I did, and I indeed see ocassional complaints.

That's why I suggested keeping it clean and dry. If it works for me, I see no reason why it could not work for others, unless their device is faulty.

I do not know what other solution you expect from Garmin or from the user forum, than offering you existing workarounds, or offering to replace it with other models. You do not even want to try a newer firmware version. Do you expect that Garmin would replace your old Instinct with a new model free of charge? Or do you expect that Garmin sends you a technician who will take your Instict apart, drilling a hole into the case on a different place and move the pressure sensor?

  • What I expect is product design based upon reason, logic, and testing.

So ask for a refund for your Instinct and buy a model that meets your criteria, since changing the design of Instinct retrospectively is impossible.

It's my assumption you used your own advice two months ago when you made your purchase?  What made you decide to buy the Instinct that was released Oct 2018 you say has an obvious design flaw and all the complaints you found posted in this forum and after doing a Google search?

  • I read and watched four reviews, none of which mentioned the barometer problem for sweaty people/people who use sunscreen/etc.

Only after purchase and the problem getting worse and worse as summer progressed into its hottest phase here, did I look for more information, and found it in abundance.

You can try and spin this all you like, but it's insanity having a barometer port right against skin. My only mistake was not taking the obvious flaw seriously enough as soon as I saw it three months ago.

    EDIT: 74 floors on a five-floor route, today :-D
