50 waypoint limit when creating a route in Garmin Explore?

Recently got an Instinct and this morning I created a small 2 mile route to walk using Garmin Explore. When I uploaded the route to my watch and began it, it gave an alert saying I’ve exceeded the 50 point limit and that any points beyond the 50th won’t be displayed.

How can a GPS watch have such a low limit? Can’t even do a 10 mile hike that may have a few hundred waypoints for navigation? Am I just doing this wrong?

Does the full route still load despite it saying it can't load more than 50 waypoints? What am I doing wrong here?

  • A route is comprised of a number of waypoints that the route follows. The very simplest route might be: waypoint 1 = start; waypoint 2 = finish.

I must say that Explore is not the most user friendly platform for planning routes and would recommend trying others in order to become more familiar with routes and waypoints and how to create a route.

  • It is unfortunate that Garmin is not consistent with terminology across product lines and has a disjointed set of applications (Basecamp is another Garmin app not in your list Relaxed) generate, store, and/or sync to the Instinct.  A waypoint is just a single point and is the same thing as a Saved Location as defined by the Instinct (I've also seen course points used with Edge devices). But, "Waypoint "is used in the list of available Instinct data fields that can be used for in-activity screen customization. Again, inconsistent.

If you want complete control over navigation and Turn-by-Turn notification, I've found that Plotaroute works best.

I feel your frustration as this should be a lot easier.  The following link from our Fenix friends might be helpful:

  • In such case, my longest course has 600 waypoints, but connect.garmin.com web makes from it .fit which contains 2745 waypoints. Loading of such course takes a while, but no problem...

But I suppose not all points, whose coordinates are stored in the course file (one long turn can consisting many of such points)  are "Waypoints", but only some important points.

  • Yes, I have found it - Next Waypoint, Distance to Next Waypoint. I am testing courses from Plotaroute along my usual bike route, I will test also these items, what does it show.

  • If there are any embedded course points in your route, the "Next Waypoint" will display the course point name (if there is one) and the "Distance to Next Waypoint" will display the distance to the next course point.

Thank you so much Ron_Layters. I have been trying to figure this out for weeks! Now it works!
