Instinct solar freezes

Hi,

Since the last update of the firmware (I have now version 11), my instinct solar keeps freezing up. Sometimes, the main watchface is hours behind the actual time and a click of a button "wakes it up" and it shows the correct time, but mostly I need to soft-reset it and of course lose everything that I did on that day.

This did not happen with earlier firmwares but now happens more and more... :-/

I did not set any "power saving mode" nor do I have set the "automated key lock" (I hope this is the right name for it, I am using a german UI).

It almost always happens over night. Two days ago, at 630 AM the display read 445 AM. Today at 755 AM it reads 230 AM (and BTW I did not wear the watch last night as it was charging...)

I was a very happy customer, but now I am really starting to lose confidence in the watch.

And yes, I have restarted the watch quite a few times ;-)

Anybody else experiencing similar issues?

Do I have to revert to a prior version of the firmware? And if so how do I do this and where do I get this firmware from?

*Any* help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers.

  • what helped for me was a factory reset - my watch was nearly running out of free space

Cleaning up the folder //GARMIN/Activity/ once a week, or once a month should be sufficient for that. If not, remove unneeded files also from the folders Workouts, Courses, etc.

right but I thought because of these freezing issues a total reset will be helping with both

  • Cannot tell, I have no freezes at all on my Instinct. Perhaps your watch freezes just because the storage is full.

  • My Instinct was less than 6 hours old when freezing first happened over night (nothing recorded) - some other problem for me at least.

  • Today Sunday 31.01.2021 at 12:21,38 my One month old Garmin Instinct Solar froze. Five buttons and none work.

I wrote the seller that I return the watch and want my money back.

  • My Garmin Instinct Solar watch froze today at 12:21,38. None of the 5 buttons work. I have written to the seller that I return the watch and

    want my moneyb back.

  • I think there is much truth in the storage statement you make. I did a factory reset and it has been crash free. My wife has an instinct solar too, but has not doe a factory reset and still suffers from crashes and freezes. I have just done a factory reset on hers so hope that has cleared out the cause of the crashes.

  • There is no need to make the master reset of the watch to free up the space, having to reconfigure it again. Just get used to delete files from the folder //GARMIN/Activity once a week (or two). And if you use to upload numerous workouts and courses, then clean up regularly unused files from the respective folders too.

  • Understood... just noticed something very weird, look at the reported space usage on the 2 screenshots below, identical watches and firmware, very different (and illogical) storage use. How much storage does the instinct solar truly have?

  • Looks like some Mac weirdness to me Slight smile

The capacity is 8 253 440 bytes (it may perhaps differ a few bytes +/- on individual devices), which is equivalent to 7.87 MiB. The 7.87 MiB, more frequently MB (in JEDEC standards, base 2) is ~8.3MB in SI standards (base 10). I have no idea where the 43.6 MB available space come from (perhaps it comes from another drive on your Mac), but Windows machines show correctly ~7 MiB free space on a recently purged Instinct ( ~1 MB taken by the default files, some courses, workouts, etc...)
