Brand new device, shipped with 0% charge, damage to battery?

I just received my device, brand new from Amazon.  When I went to activate it, it would not even boot up.  When I plugged it in to charge, the battery showed 0%.  How much charge was in your device when  you received it?  Should I be concerned that this was sitting in the warehouse for a long period of time at 0% state of charge?  Generally, leaving a lithium-ion battery at 0% state of charge damages the battery and reduces it's overall capacity.  Should I return it and get another one?

  • I never used it after my last trip, but I'm about to use it again next weekend.  I'll try to remember to report back.  Feel free to ping me if I forget.   This is disappointing to hear that these products are getting shipped in this state.  They should know better in how to store lithium ion batteries.

  • Yeah, I suspect it is something more like: Batteries are initially charged to 40% or so, but they have a fairly high standby current (Garmin quotes 1 year battery life when off) so if it's sitting in a warehouse for more than 6 months it'll be down to the 0% level, at which point the battery's built-in circuitry kicks in to prevent any more drain.
