What will happen if we lose the Fenix 5 charge pin 2 due to corrosion.

HI All,

I have been studying most of the thread about the Fenix 5 charge pin 2 corrosion. I'm just curious what will happen if we let them rust and broken. Some thread informed that the charge is done via pin 1 and 4. So what is the function of pin 2 and 3? If it is for data transfer only, we have the bluetooth and wifi connection.

Note : I'm a fenix5sapphire user. Just about to make a claim for this corrosion issues because after a super carefull maintenance for 1.5 year it keeps coming.

Regards

  • With my pin 2 corroded, it's difficult to get it to charge the batter. Every time I need to charge is multiple rounds alcohol+cotton swab and wiggling the charging cable. I'm on my first replacement and I don't think it will make it to 4 months. It's so weird, I have training partners with the same, Fenix 5, and show absolutely no corrosion after 2 full years of use and they are a heavier saltier sweater than I am.

  • Use the blue part of a regular pencil eraser to clean the corrosion. It will make the pin good as new

  • Thanks for the info mate. Yeah I saw some people do not have this problem and others have.

  • Update 6 jan 2021:

I managed to make contact via Garmin Toll Free and connected to Garmin Support center in Singapore. They reffered me to Indonesia local distributor. Here, the local distributor add 1 more year to the warranty so total we got 2 years of warranty. Today I put the watch for inspection with the local distributor.

After some tough discussion with the customer service, they accept to check my watch and explain that it will take 7-14 days of process ((*!@^!)(*#*@(^#(*!&$(). If the corrosion keeps coming and then it stops charging when the product is out of warranty it would be detrimental to the customer!! I love the watch but knowing this defect just makes me think twice to get another product from Garmin.

Lets see what is the outcome of my claim. If anyone in this forum is residing in Indonesia and have similar experience, please share your experience dealing with the local Indonesia Garmin distributor.

  • I have 2 watches being replaced under warranty because of this corroding pin together (pins were completely gone) with a high battery consumption (>15%/day). I always cleaned the pins after an activity, but no effect. This is just a kind of galvanic corrosion. So using my third watch for almost a year now and this has still completely free of corrosion and battery consumption of a satisfying 5%/day. I use the ...same apps and watch faces on all watches I had and have. So there is something in the watch causing this. But a good working Fenix 5 is possible and I hope everyone will get a decent working watch under warranty.

  • Thanks for sharing TERP1234. Mine is pretty similar. The battery drains more less 15% a day. I use the watch mostly for running with only 1 time pool swimming in a year. I always rinse the watch with tap water after each run and hang dry before re-strap to my wrist.

Do you have any serial number from your first, second, and third watch? Obviously the third watch is the best product so far.

  • I only have the serial of my latest and proper working watch: 536345235

I treated my second watch similar as you do after the experience with the first one, but despite this special care the second pin completely disappeared by corrosion. And it is only this second pin that corrodes, not any other one.

But I forgot to mention one thing. Because of the bad battery life of the 1st watch I installed a battery widget on the 2nd one that was also measuring on the background. Could it be that this widget sets a bit of current on the pins? I haven't installed this widget on my 3rd watch, only one that meassures if you open it.

  • Thanks for the Info. Lets see what is the outcome. Hopefully the corrosion problem go away.
