Map Update of TopoActive 2018.20 failed

My device prompted me today that an update for Topoactive Map 2018.20 is available.
Once starting the installer tells me that due to many new features the update is too large.

From the log its size is 7.19 GB

Which maps can i delete and how without getting XML files inconsistent?
It should be more than one, because the largest i currently have is the Cycle Map with approx 3.5 GB

Wonder that nobody reported it so far, several other users having this issue too. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1453447.jpg
  • tactix Charlie (= Fenix 5X) with 12.40 and Garmin Express 6.11.1.0: Update to TopoActive 2018.20 failed.

Then I deleted (after backing up) the following files:
    gmapprom.img, gmapprom.sum
    gmapprom1.img, gmapprom1.sum
    GarminDevice.xml

unplugged and plugged to PC, update worked.
  • Berns thx for the info! great to now that you only have to delete the .img and sum files. i deleted the .gma and und files too.
  • I still have the problem with the European Cycling Map 2017.10, no update possible.
Log of Garmin Express: "Garmin.Omt.Service.Operation.Map.InvalidMapInstallException: Could not determine where to install the map."
I think I don't have this map installed on my device, because there are no "gmapcycle" files and JaVaWa Device Manager doesn't show it.
  • I installed that Topoactive 2080.20 update yesterday without any problems and I had only 1.7GB free in my watch so it's not about the free space I think.

But what else? Express clearly states that. And the file is more than 7 GB in size which does not fit without deleting maps.
  • It's not really due to space, deleted as some above, cycle maps, gmapprom.img etc etc also xml file leaving 10gigs on the watch as free space still cannot update as getting always the same message

Have also tried Hard Reset as well, also down graded to offical 12.40 rather than the beta 12.51, still no success

So I do believe this is a software bug rather than just a simple space problem

Hurry up Garmin get this sorted
  • Send email to Garmin , this is what they answer.

    Hello Thanasis,

Your Fenix 5X has over 9GB of available memory unless you have added your own custom mapping from either 3rd party non-Garmin sources or through Garmin's UK webpage where we sell pre-tested and certified maps that you can add in addition to what came on your Fenix 5X.

Please check to ensure your Fenix 5X has enough room on it compared to how large the map update files that Garmin Express is pushing.

Also, if you have added your own mapping to it, which some people do, you will now need to decide what mapping is more important to you and delete the mapping or ignore the newer map updates for what you already have on your Fenix 5X.

    Thank you for choosing Garmin,

I never use any other maps than the original but my fenix had only 1,2 gb free memory . Send them new mail, waiting for their answer.
  • I sussed it

I deleted the files that start wit D ....... (see photo) note that I had already deleted most of the gmap.... files before with no succes

Also just to be sure I deleleted just about all the gmap.... files as well

Even when they are deleted you still have the map on the watch, so I don't understand what they are there for

When I say deleted, I copied all to a folder on my PC first, this take ages .... the deleted them and the XML file as well, unplugged the watch plugged it back again, and voilà....

Miracle I could finally do the update, after just reinstalled the cycle maps using garmin express even though I never used them

Note after nex D..... files are created on your watch, noting has to be copied back over to it

  • They are very small files, and provide unlock codes for maps. There's no way they are responsible for taking up much room on your device.
  • [SOLVED]
    howto
    • connect Fenix to your pc
    • use basecamp (Maps ==> Manage Map Products) to check the filename associated to your TopoActive Map
    • delete the related files with the .gma .img and .unl extension
    • delete the garmindevice.xml file (so totally it's 4 files deleted)
    • disconnect trom pc
    • reconnect to pc
    • launch garmin express update
