What is your experience with calorie calculations...do you find it credible (bike)?

[new Fenix owner]. I just used my Fenix for the first time on a bike ride. I also have an Edge 705 (old!). I like to track calories burned during activities, bike or other. I never used the figures on the Edge 705, as they seemed waaaay to high (and many others on the forum agreed with this). Now, my first ride with the Fenix 5, calorie calculation seems waaay too low! I have gathered my own figures from the web (averages) based only on rider weight, average speed, and time. So, that is pretty crude, does not include wind, hills, but it is in line with the usual figures you hear for calories burned on a bike. But, look at the three results i get for this 2h17m ride, average speed 11.9mph. They're not even in the same ballpark. Not even close!

Edge 705: 1,681 cal
Fenix 5: 738 cal
My own calculation: 1,346 cal

So, just wonder, do folks find the figure calculated by Fenix for calories to be good, usable, reasonable? Or, is there some consensus that it is too high, too low, too inaccurate, etc?

    Startling to me how i always thought that it was "generally believed" that bike burned about 600 cal/hr for "regular riders" (not necessarily racers or major athletes), but yet it looks like that may be quite an overestimate. And yet many of the calculators do come up with a figure close to that.

But in the past the error just disappeared by itself if i posted a few more times but this time it did not. So, i cut this off and the other part posted ok. Now...i'll see if i can post this. If you see it, i could post it. In that case it leads to the question, does anybody else get this error in trying to post and does anybody know a solution?]

    I thought I would post this here just for folk's info in case you are interested. I ran a theoretical ride of 13mph (most calculators allow you to select "12-14 mph", but some you can input 13), 60 minutes, 178 lb male, 67yo; on various calculators. Bikecalculator.com stands way out from the others. I also mention what my Fenix 5 reported, but it is not directly comparable as the mph was 11.9, and though it was a mostly flat course, there was one up and one down. On BikeCalculator i made an adjustment to add in BMR to make it comparable to others which do include BMR, and also to adjust "body efficiency" from BikeCalculator's default of 25% (usually for a trained athlete) to 20% which i have read is more in the "normal person" range. Here is that data.
  • I'm far from pro and burn about 600-800 calories an hour depending how hard i'm going (usually 17-19mph on a rolling route or a hard turbo session This is measured with a power meter though. Without having a power meter the calorie numbers really aren't reliable.
  • Least reliable (and usually highest) are the calorie estimates based on METs (basically, any calculator which only asks for your weight, activity type and maybe gender and age).

    Accuracy +/-50% (possibly even worse).
