Low hr activity

hi

bought recently a fenix 5. One thing i noticed my hr when doing a walk activty is not more than 97 bpm. When i put my cheast heart rate it os over 110 -120 same pace uphill. When i dont start activity hr on the widget is good. As soon as i start walking activity hr drops to no zone. When running it is no problem

I have the same issue. After somewhere between 5 and 15 workouts, my heart rate won't read or display above 100bpm during a workout, where I know I'm staying in the 120-150 range.

It will lock in on a number, usually about 90bpm, and then slowly and very steadily (and very inorganically!) rise or fall over the course of the workout, not matching the changing intensity of my workout at all.

There's no pattern to it that I can discern. I can do the same workout ten times, same watching tightness, same arm, everything, and one time it'll just stop working.

Three reasons I believe it's a bug and not just some combination of sweat / bloating / arm hair / random chance / ambient light messing it up:

    1) As soon as I reboot, the issue goes away, and it starts working perfectly again. Halfway through a run I can reboot and my heart rate will go from being stuck at some number in the mid 90s, to the real number in the 120-150 range.

    2) The slow raise in BPM doesn't match my workout intensity at all. It rises or falls perfectly linearly, which seems like a glitch to me because a real workout doesn't look anything like that.

    3) If I exit the activity and go back to my normal watch face which displays my bpm, it immediately shoots up to the correct heart rate in the 120 - 150 range.

I've had this issue since I bought the watch. I'm on 10.x now and still have the issue. I've reset multiple times and it doesn't fix it. I have learned to live with it and now reboot every couple days to avoid the problem.

It's super annoying because it really screws up my measurements like VO2, heart rate zones, calories burned, etc.
  • It is definitely tied to the "activity" section as the virtual trainer race an activity portion is also broken. It worked fine on the last sw ver. 9.73 I believe, but could it be due to the addition of the abnormal HR feature that was added in 10.0?

    Rijald,
Did you talk with Garmin yesterday?

Talked to garmin today. Only idea they had was to do a hard reset. If that dosent work then send it for repairs.
Will try to do a reset this weekend
  • Just did a reset. Did bot help. Same problem. Next is send it back to garmin. Third garmin device and problem with everyone
  • I too did a hard reset. Funny thing is that I didn't think it helped until I went for a run. Normally I was basing my findings off of my lunch time power walks but I wanted to see if a run made a difference and it did. My heart rate tracked as I expected it should. I would get increases during the run portions and then it would slowly drop back to aerobic low level while i walked. As soon as it dropped to low aerobic I would start running again and it would climb as expected into the high threshold area.

The next day I went for a 5 mile walk with the intent of pushing myself. No running but some inclines and declines high humidity and sun. Lots of sweating and it seemed to track pretty close to what i would expect for an OHM.

Now I'm starting to wonder if the readings were more inaccurate before the update to 10.0. With the new heart rate alert feature that was added could the OHM now be tracking more accurately?

I am having exactly the same issue, and I believe it can all be traced back to the update to the 10x versino. I am reaching out Garmin to ask for a solution (other than hard reset)

They have no solutions. Told me to send the device back. They will send me a new fenix 5

That´s stupid! It needs to be software related (and expensive for them), it was working well few weeks ago. I don´t want to 1) be without the watch for a couple of weeks 2) having to get the new one set up.

Let´s see how ti goes, I just sent them an email

Here is the initial, and a totally unacceptable response. I am pushing back on it.

"Por lo que, desde Garmin, recomendamos utilizar el sensor óptico interno para el control wellness, pero para entrenamientos recomendamos el uso de una banda pectoral –revisar compatibilidad-, las mediciones siempre serán más precisas con la banda pectoral, la tecnología óptica tienes sus limitaciones."

Translation: "For all the above, from Garmin, we recommend to use the built-in HRM for wellness, but for workouts, we recommend to use the external HRM".

Are you really telling me that I can´t use a 500€ device for tracking my workouts?...
