I was on the prior public release version of the firmware until this morning when i noticed at 8am my watch had updated automatically. I charged to 54% in the shower and while getting dressed this morning. We are now a mere 8 hours later and my watch is down to 26%. I've lost over a quarter of my battery in barely a quarter of a day. This could be a very bad sign for 9.20. I guess i'm now left only with the option of uninstalling my watch face to try and get the battery performance back to where it should be. what a pain in the A...
Try switching to a standard face and restarting. I found using a third party face caused a drop for me yesterday again - would have been 20 percent per day if I had left it. Switched back to normal, restarted and the battery (So far) is where I would expect it to be - consumed 3% in last nine hours.
I'm using Gearmin as my watch face. Insane that Garmin would create a new firmware version, force it to deploy to everyone's watch and basically make it incompatible with THE NUMBER ONE DOWNLOADED PIECE OF SOFTWARE in their store. The rate of battery drain basically makes this watch no better than an iWatch or something like that. Good thing I'm still barely within the extended return period on my American Express. I may just send this thing back given I'm not going to deal with a watch that is constantly running low on battery.
I called Gamin support today about the battery issue. I outlined the usage change after the 9.20 upgrade. He was very professional and asked if we could take the time to collect data from my 5x. In the end I ended up attaching the entire Garmin folder, minus the maps, to my support case. He did comment that their engineering team was very interested in reviewing the data. I commented that the topic was being discussed heavily on the Garmin Support forums. He pointed out that they can't ask for data to be sent to Garmin via the forum and users need to open support cases for that.
The moral here is take the time call support. Don't be rude or aggressive and state a willingness to be part of a solution. Yes, it will take time out of your day, but it may yield a better result in the end.
I'm also seeing degraded battery life after the update and have emailed Garmin support regarding the issue. I would urge everyone having battery life concerns to contact Garmin Support.
I contacted Garmin by chat, seems that aware about the issue, as they asked only for Garmin folder and approval to my Garmin Connect account to check activities, so I hope they're working on it. At least they didn't argue and didn't try to explain that this battery usage is normal.
Well, just got email from Garmin support, they want me to send them my watch to investigate, and they will send me the new one. This is strange, as the issue with 9.20 easily reproducible.
