fenix 5X Plus released

Rumors seems correct: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/603229
"Processing time is 2–3 weeks."
  • The battery specs seem better than the 5x - if the 32 hours is correct (without music)

    Smartwatch: Up to 20 days
    GPS: Up to 32 hours
GPS and Music: Up to 13 hours
UltraTrac[SUP]Tm[/SUP] mode: Up to 70 hours
  • I'm disgusted. I've been waiting a year to switch from Fenix 3, to 5, because the support provided for this device was already terrible, just like hardware of Fenix 3 in 2017. Now, after 2 months of using Fenix 5 and after many hours of anger caused by bugs, issues and still terrible support, I hear, that instead of improving, changing the way Garmin communicate with own community, they prefer to release another model, sorry, not model, the WHOLE NEW FAMILY+, which probably will end like Descent, because the price of it is sky-high. The support and gps issues probably will still remain. So, now it looks that Fenix 5 is for 5plus what the Fenix3 is for Fenix 5, lower-class device. Thanks.
  • Not needing music ( I prefer the sound of silence when I am in nature) or payments from my watch ( I am fine with my wallet as it also contains my drivers license) and battery life has been excellent for me with the 5X. I like the announcement as a Garmin stockholder but no intent on an upgrade for any reason.

Now that the new Fenix 5x plus is coming out, which brings built-in music, will they release some updates for the Fenix 5x? It would be very interesting to be able to listen to music just by wearing the watch ... And I do not think we should leave such an expensive watch anymore obsolete....
  • The original 5x is fully capable of using the elevation data from the maps yet garmin has yet to implement it. Also the GPS chip is fully capable of using the galileo network but they refuse again to update it for us.

You are so damn right. But you know why they did that ?Because they want more money from us.They want us to buy their new watches full of bugs and paid double for them. And the sad part is that will be a lot of guys who will buy garmin new watches! And of course, galileo will not be implemented into fenix5x watches because : they are not compatible, they don't have the chipset to support galileo.Of course those are only lies...

This a really concern for me. I just got my 5x and really like it. In the past Garmin seems to focus development only on the newest models. I don't want a watch that's no longer getting really system updates. I just dropped a lot of my hard earned money on the 5x.

I could still return mine for a full refund to REI and get the Suunto I was looking at (Spartan Baro HR). Suunto also just dropped the Suunto 9 with a sapphire crystal for $600.

Dam Garmin. This really frustrates me.
  • Nice timing! I just got my 5X last week and now they release the new plus(es). I am glad I got a fat discount on my (new) 5X cause I wouldn't want to pay the new "plus size prices" anyway. :D

Garmin Pay and music means nothing to me since I would carry my cell phone anyway. Map in 5S is nice for people with smaller wrist size and wear the watch as daily watch. But I would want bigger screen for maps since my eyes are bad, meaning I would need at least 5. The new sensor on 5X is good, but do I need it? All the other minor upgrades are nice to have, but again, I probably can live without them.

Anyway, I would take a fat discount on 5X over the pricing for the new 5 plus sapphire or the new 5X plus.

    But that's just me.

  • So that is why firmware updates for the "Non-Plus" 5's has been slow. Lets hope Garmin pull themselves together and fix the incredible amount of outstanding bugs.

As a 5X user - I'm not going Plus - the prices are crazy for an incremental hardware upgrade. Only plus's for me is more battery life and maybe more sensor support and maybe slightly better GPS? I don't care about Garmin Pay, Music or OX. - Topo maps - maybe but Alti calibration could have been done a lot easier (send Lat/Lon via internet - get altitude back - very few bytes needed)

And not only are the prices higher - Garmin has made rounds to UK resellers to stop the discounts you used to be able to get. So none of my membership discount coupons work with the Plus's. They worked with the Fenix 3, 3HR and 5. So for me it is not only GBP 150,- more expensive - it is more like GBP 250,- more expensive.

But there are so many places the 5X could be made better in software but I guess that is a done deal.

    What would make me upgrade:
    1. More open - like ANT+ standard for FREE with NO fees or certification fees etc. Else everything will turn Bluetooth.
    2. Better Indoor gym implementations (Power, Machine interfaces etc) - went to a Gym Saturday with brand new TechnoGym gear. All Bluetooth only... With extra butter for Apple Watch users.
    3. Better Pool sw for < 17m pools (hotels, community pools etc)

    and fixing all the bugs

Same story here, purchased a 5x just a few days ago with a good discount in comparison to the new Plus prices (UK)
It will be used as my F3 was mostly used, for trail running and mountain biking where I need to have my phone on me anyway to make emergency calls so the music and pay features are not important. As for the additional sensor, I doubt I’d understand what it does to be honest. I won’t be a daily wear watch, I have a Vivosmart 3 for an acitivity tracker.
So, despite buying just before this launch, i’m very pleased to have bought the 5x (with the mapping which is the main reason for upgrading) at a much lower price than the latest offerings.
