I am disappointed my fenix 5X did not auto correct this weekend considering it is supposed to be a "Smart watch" and all. Having to sync with GPS is clumsy and not ideal if you are indoors and can not get a signal or need the alarm to turn on in the correct time in the morning. If my memory is correct I believe my fenix 3 updates the time by itself no need for GPS sync. What is up with this? Surely must be a bug...
I see some people in here writes that it is supposed to synchronize time with the phone or the computer but I do not think this is the case. In fact one of the downsides I experienced when coming from the Suunto Ambit 2 Sapphire and Moveslink 2 was that the fenix 3 nor the 5X with Garmin Connect did not sync the time when charging trough a computer! But I want the fenix 5X to be able to adjust for DST by itself with no need for any synchronization with a computer or phone.
With the fenix 3, the manual says that it only updates from GPS, but there was an update early on that added functionality to get the time zone and the time from the connected mobile device when in Auto mode. Mine is in Auto mode and was connected to my mobile phone and updated overnight without needing a GPS fix. On the Vivoactive 1, for example, there is no option to get the time from GPS, only the mobile device so this would seem to be Garmin's preferred method. Presumably the fenix 5 has inherited the same (partially undocumented) functionality from the fenix 3.
From thefenix 3 change log:
Changes made from version 4.70 to 6.05:
Improved ability to detect time zone changes without a GPS fix (requires connection to Garmin Connect Mobile app and time set to 'Auto' on device, Settings > System > Time > Set Time).
Changes made from version 6.55 to 6.63:
Fixed a potential issue where device time would not update correctly, when crossing time zones and connected to the Garmin Connect Mobile app.
