Feature Request: Hourly Chime

I just came over from ProTrek land and am really missing my hourly heartbeat!

If I'm missing the setting and it's available deep in some menu somewhere, please let me know!

It seems insane to me that this isn't an option. Hourly chime has been a staple, standard feature of digital watches since digital watches came out.

I get that the API needs to limit watch face access to the system for stability and energy optimization but it seems like this could easily be added as a basic system option the way other notifications and alerts are always available if people want them.

Please add this!
  • standard feature of digital watches since digital watches came out.

And since digital watches came out the world has evolved. I don't think most people want this "feature" anymore. In my opinion hourly chime is an annoying thing if you happen to be in a room with others.
  • We have discussed this many times. I was asking about it on the Fenix 3 forum since the very beginning. I think it can either chime or make a vibration alert. Many people are on hourly medication or hourly tasks and this would be really something many would appreciate. Comment about people are irritated with hourly chime is simply selfish. Its about choice. I also was on ProTrek and was surprised that its not included. My understanding was, that no app on Fenix 3 can go deep to the system and control sound or vibrations. It should be doable within Fenix 5 environment. Time will tell. Fingers crossed. There are zillions of ugly and stupid watch faces, why there is no one with hourly chime beep/vibration alert?
  • Now that it is possible with the background processing in CIQ 2.3, did you suggest it as an idea?
  • As a writer of some of those "ugly and stupid" watchfaces, the answer is that in Connect IQ there is no access to the Attention Module. It's an overall design decision by Garmin for watch faces. (it could be battery related).

Have you considered just setting a timer? the f5 has a native one and there are others in the CIQ app store. You could also write your own "ugly and stupid" watch-app that looks like a watch face, but beeps! :)
  • PubBike. The Attention module (tones and vibrations) isn't available in background processes. This has been asked about in the past.
  • All is not lost though. There are still several avenues to explore:
    • keep badgering Garmin to add it to the built-in watch face.
    • buy a casio watch and put it on your other wrist.
    • Make an app that plays the sampled sound of an F-91W on the connected mobile phone every hour.
    • etc.
  • Comment about people are irritated with hourly chime is simply selfish.

The thing is, having your watch set to beep hourly in public places, whatever people around you feel about it, is actually pretty selfish. People are not good about turning the hourly beeps off in environments like cinemas. In a shared office space, you should avoid distracting your office mates.

If you actually need to take medication once an hour on the hour, then I agree you need an alarm to remind you of that (and I sympathise with your position).

without taking party, I think that with the billions of tones and beeps and the like coming from existing mobile phones when receiving notifications, saying that a an hourly beep will break the world peace is a little exaggerated.

I do not need an hourly beep, but the requester have spent a couple of hundreds of dollars in his watch and is asking for something very basic, also he has said that a vibration beep will do the trick in case world peace is indeed altered by sound beeps.

  • I think you can safely assume I'm also not a fan of people who keep their phones on in cinemas :) At least notifications are giving you new information.

I actually see the price argument in the opposite direction; I don't think an hourly beep for no particular reason has any place on an upmarket watch, unless it's a grande sonnerie. I don't think your average Rolex beeps every hour.

I don't usually tell people that features they want are actually a bad idea just because I don't want them myself, but this is something that affects others around you to. I decided to weigh in when my POV was characterised as selfish.

Yeah like I said in the OP, I assumed an hourly chime option would be something that would need to be implemented on the system level. It shouldn't need to be a third party app, or a widget or a watch face. It should just be an option in the system menu somewhere. If they can support timers and alarms running in the background via the base watch OS, they should be able to implement an hour chime using the same mechanism (available as beep, vibrate, or both, and an option to toggle it with DND mode).

Also, I don't really care what some forums blowhard thinks about this feature request. There's a reason hourly chime is an option on pretty much every digital watch made in the last 40 years. It's a basic, standard, useful feature on digital watches, used all day every day by tens of millions of people.

I work from home and spend lots of time outdoors. The hourly chime is super useful to me, and it isn't bothering anyone. Chill out.
