Realistic battery life, fenix 5?

Hello all,

So last week I bought a fenix 5. Store had it in open box and on the shelf but it was off, I was worried about it having been on for months on the shelf but they told me it had never been powered on, they only had the 5X on display powered up. Bought it, no discount got home and charged it. The battery was completely discharged.

One of my main reasons for buying the fenix 5 vs a 3 or another less expensive option was battery life - as I am starting to run ultra marathons.

Last Saturday ran my first. I started with 95% charge. GPS only mode (no Glonnass). I played occasionally with the watch during the race, and often moved it into view to see my HR (with backlight at 50%). Halfway into the race, 7 hours in, I notice it is at 40% battery. I changed it to Ultratrac in the activity settings menu, and start avoiding using the backlight or play with it(still glancing at it often to see HR).

My race time was 14 hours 30 minutes. When I made it across the finish line, literally 1 minute after, I glance at the watch to stop the activity and it powered down.

I know actual, realistic device times are often lower than what the manufacturer advertises. Still, advertised GPS mode at 20 hours and Ultratrac 60 hours, seems I should have gotten to the end of this race with a good battery reserve. I am planning longer races later in the season so... this watch might not cut it, apparently. My iphone 7 plus in airplane mode, but doing GPS tracking, went through all of this with 30% power left and me taking some pictures and listening to podcasts on the way.

So question to the group - is this the normal battery life I can expect from this device while tracking activities? Or did I get a dud or a battery affected by it being a showroom device?

Unsure if I am just being paranoid and need to enjoy the device and go Ultratrac from the start, turn off the backlight (not needed to be honest).

Thanks all,

Juan

Interesting that so many of us have the same glitch. I'm off to ride a 200k, that should be about 8 hours GPS time plus stops. It will be interesting to see how the Fenix performs. I'll have my trusty Etrex as backup. On the Fenix 3 I'd of had over 50% battery left. According to Garmin the 5 should have a longer range. I have also ordered a Suunto 9 to compare.

Buying a new Garmin shouldn't be this much hard work but I have had problems with a Fenix 3HR (massive shifts in altitude) replaced 3x before buying the Fenix 3. Fenix 3 was faultless. 800 Edge and 705 Edge both freezing and corrupting date. On both occasions I just reverted back to my Etrex 30 (again rock solid).

So in the last ten years I have had two solid Garmins after owning around 8 units. Maybe it my own bloody fault for being loyal to the brand. I also purchased a Fenix 5s for my better half when they launched, that has been rock solid.

Good luck with the units Anatoli and Danlorek.
  • I bought a Fenix 5 one week ago and it has worst battery that my previous Vivoactive HR :-( Battery drains ~0.6% every hour, and the last 24h a 61% with 2h bike ride. I can't compare with previous software version. I've two more weeks to test it, if it won't get a lot better I will return it.
  • I've have received a replacement for my Fenix 5. Same 5Q serial number. Same flat battery on arrival. Same massive discharge rate. I'll try a few recharging cycles but I think a company starting with S is going to get my money! Shame as I have been a Garmin user for decades and really like this watch!

Where I can see if the serial number starts with 5Q? On the back I've a 9 digit number without letters.

Apparently, yours does not start with 5Q - you have only digits for serial number :)
What is your discharge rate per hour?

    0.6% without touching it :-(
  • I wonder what is the chance the battery life to increase after several charges... Honestly, I'm not very convinced that this will happen...
  • I bought my Fenix 5 a week ago and I´ve exactly the same problem. Battery 0% at delivery time and I have charged fully two times. My battery drains 30% per day with 1GPS hour. I had a Fenix 3Hr and I didn´t have that problem with the same configuration (no notifications, BT+, no light and 1GPS+Glonass hour per day). I asked to amazon to replace my unit and they acepted so...we will see.

PS. My s/n begins in 5 but without any letter
  • I've bought 2 on the Black Friday... the one I'm using and experimenting battery drain problems and other one that I've not opened yet. Now I tried a hard reset, if it didn't work I will try the other.

Exactly the same story. I bought F5 week ago .....battery 0% at delivery and cca. 0,6 % discharge per hour in watch mode. 5Q XXX....

OK I had a weird experiance with the replacement Fenix. I went on a 9 hour bike ride with around 2 hours stopped time and the Fenix behaved perfectly consuming around 4-5% per hour so hitting the projected 20-24 hour target for activities quite easily. I had no navigation running, BT was on. I returned home with 58% battery life.

I have been back several hours and the watch initially was recording .1 to .2 an hour discharge in watch mode. It has now creapped back up to .6. (it was a full 1% per hour over 9 hours before I charged it to 100% before leaving last nigh.

I have no clue, on this one example I have 'normal' drain in activities and beween 3-5 time faster than it should be as a watch......
