Realistic battery life, fenix 5?

Hello all,

So last week I bought a fenix 5. Store had it in open box and on the shelf but it was off, I was worried about it having been on for months on the shelf but they told me it had never been powered on, they only had the 5X on display powered up. Bought it, no discount got home and charged it. The battery was completely discharged.

One of my main reasons for buying the fenix 5 vs a 3 or another less expensive option was battery life - as I am starting to run ultra marathons.

Last Saturday ran my first. I started with 95% charge. GPS only mode (no Glonnass). I played occasionally with the watch during the race, and often moved it into view to see my HR (with backlight at 50%). Halfway into the race, 7 hours in, I notice it is at 40% battery. I changed it to Ultratrac in the activity settings menu, and start avoiding using the backlight or play with it(still glancing at it often to see HR).

My race time was 14 hours 30 minutes. When I made it across the finish line, literally 1 minute after, I glance at the watch to stop the activity and it powered down.

I know actual, realistic device times are often lower than what the manufacturer advertises. Still, advertised GPS mode at 20 hours and Ultratrac 60 hours, seems I should have gotten to the end of this race with a good battery reserve. I am planning longer races later in the season so... this watch might not cut it, apparently. My iphone 7 plus in airplane mode, but doing GPS tracking, went through all of this with 30% power left and me taking some pictures and listening to podcasts on the way.

So question to the group - is this the normal battery life I can expect from this device while tracking activities? Or did I get a dud or a battery affected by it being a showroom device?

Unsure if I am just being paranoid and need to enjoy the device and go Ultratrac from the start, turn off the backlight (not needed to be honest).

Thanks all,

Juan

    I also have 6.20
  • Mine is 6.25, but I have installed beta 12.21.

p.s. I have downgraded from stable 12.30 to beta 12.21 because the battery drain on 12.30 was greater than on 12.21... I don't know what can be the reason for this...
  • Hi jamesrussell01 ! Sensor Hub v.6.25 was included in the 12.21 beta.

Also, for the record, I still havent charged my watch, and it's still on 13% :D , so tomorrow at 13 it will have lasted for a good 7 days including quite a few hours of running with GPS and a swimming session!

I have since upgraded to 12.30 without any noticable change in battery usage...

(Note, the time scale from Battery Gauge is way off... The graph is off, "usage last hour is off" (I'm guessing it shows "usage this hour"), and I know usage last 24 hours is off.)

    [EDIT #1]
The upgrades included in the beta:
    • GPS 2.30
    • Sensor Hub 6.25
    • System 12.21
    • Text 2.90
    • Wifi 2.40
Current versions after upgrading to 12.30:
    • System 12.30
    • GPS 2.30
    • Wifi: 2.40
    • CIQ: 301
    • Sensors hub 6.25 (BLE/ANT/SNS)
    • WHR; 20.03.31

Also interesting site-note, when upgrading trough Garmin Connect Mobile, I always only get the System update, when I previously tried to get the GPS 2.20 update, it would only fetch it when using Garmin Express on a PC...
  • Richard-Hagen,
would you still happen to have the 12.21 beta dl? if so could you send me that file so i can get the 6.25 sensor file?

  • My fenix 5 was purchased in June 2017, I wear the watch 24x7 and use it as a smartwatch, OHR on 24x7. These days I exercise every day (approx 30 mins, GPS+Galileo mostly on + tempe + footpod + HR if running, cadence/speed + HR if cycling) and my battery discharge levels are -8%/day, estimated life (per Battery Widget) is 11 days. I am on 12.51.

Finally I got back my fenix 5 in friday after 20 days, the voise report show: firmware update and laboratories check. After the watch configuration I check the firmware in order to know the version: 12.21. After 3 days the average consumpion is 4.2-4.3% just in watch mode. Im really happy about that situation, fortunally i deactivated the autoupdate on the system. I follow the situation during next days when the battery charge arrive around about 50%.

    Hi,

I've recently bought an F5 and seem to have one that suffers from the battery drain issue, i've been waiting for the stable fw release (I have no laptop) so got excited upon reading the Garmin statement that it's been rolled out to 100% of users but my watch is still on fw12.0. Auto-update is on and I've synced the watch to GCM a few times but no update, is there something else I should be doing?

    Thanks
    Dan

Shortly after posting I got a notification on my watch telling me that the software had been updated to 12.30, however the watch is still showing fw12.00 and the software download is available but constantly fails telling me to update through Connect. I've received the 'software updated' notification at least 7 times now. Is this normal? Is there anything else I need to do? I can't see any update option on Connect but have seen the software update being pushed during sync on a couple of occasions.

Please note I DO NOT have a PC/Laptop/Mac available on which I can use GE.

    Thanks
