I've been on each of the newest firmwares as they come out (betas included) and use the Tri chest strap (bundle). I've been running 2 or 3 times /week for the past few weeks but I haven't seen the VO2 nor Lactate thresholds calculating anywhere. Is anyone else having this problem?
ok, went for a run using RUN, I got the VO2 max calculated, rest advisor, race predictor etc....
so try runing outside using RUN activity, not Trail run...
Screw it. I'm deleting the Trail run activity, copying the running activity and renaming it trail run.
Just be aware that if you do this you may end up with really odd V02 max calculations and they're likely to vary a lot from run to run, unless you're doing the same run each time.
Garmin use an algorithm to calculate your V02 which is fairly accurate for standard flat or level runs but it can't compensate for the variation caused by steep ascents/descents and tricky terrain in trail running.
An extreme example would be if you did a trail run with a lot of steep climbs - your pace will slow right down but your heart rate would shoot up. The algorithm would assume you are unfit because of this.
A less obvious example would be this - if you do a trail run that has tricky terrain and you are forced to slow down in order to make your way through it then the calculation would also assume a lack of fitness on your part.
This is why they removed the calculation from Trail Runs in the first place. They might be able to reinstate it in the future if they find a new algorithm to use.
