Third party Watch Faces working?

I've tried several watch faces from the IQ store that display a lot of data including realtime HR; but so far none of them have worked correctly.

HR shows as N/A or a fixed number that doesn't change and faces which display HR graphs show no data.

Changing settings on the watch faces seems to save sometimes, save and then later revert back or just just plain not save.

Some faces install and let me select them on the watch, but then it reverts to display a standard Garmin face.

All of the faces I have tried have worked perfectly on my FR 935.

Is this a known issue or have I landed a faulty unit?
  • Any chance garmin gave an indication of a realistic timing to fix this, or a firmware update schedule, or best yet a sense if they're going to do a better job than I've seen with the last three garmin I've owned?
    Ben

I don't work for Garmin, so I have no idea on time frames, etc, but I will say, the top guy for Gamin's CIQ team very aware of it and hoping to get things fixed ASAP!

Glad its an issue that should get fixed then.

I got used to a certain watch face on my FR935 so was wanting to use the same on on the F5X.

Just an update; I had a reply from one of the ConnectIQ people confirming that they are on the issue.

"The problems you mention with the fenix 5X are related to a known issue--the fenix 5X is different from a hardware perspective compared to the 5 and 5S, which is at the core of these problems. It's not a hardware problem, so there's no worry about faulty hardware. Instead, the 5X has some additional processing power that we've tried to use in a novel way, and it's not working out as well we'd planned. I've had a couple of other individuals contact me this week about these same issues, and in fact, we just discussed this yesterday in a weekly team meeting we have to review the latest reported issues. At this point, there are still decisions being made about this, but once the device team determines the approach they intend to take, we should be able to get these problems fixed pretty quickly. "

So hopefully should get sorted soon.
  • Yes, this was discussed at the CIQ Developer Summit last week with the Garmin CIQ folks , and what's happening with HR and sunrise/sunset are basically the same problem, and the same with different watchfaces. Since I got home, I been looking at my own watchfaces on the 5x, and found a possible short term work-around for sunrise/sunset, but may vary based on how a developer coded their watchface, and wont update the location (needed for rise/set), as it should, if you got to a new place, unless you repeat the steps there.

Here's the trick that may work based on the watch face for rise/set: Start something like the native running app that uses GPS. After there's a GPS fix, go to the widget loop (long press of the down button is the default hotkey). Go to your watchface if you don't see it right away, and you'll likely see the rise/set. You can then back out of the widget loop and exit the run app. If the watchfaces caches the last location it knows for rise/set, it should show on the watch face when you use it in "watch mode", but the caching logic may vary by developer or watchface. The location may also be cached by the watch face while in preview mode (where you can go though the watch faces and select the one you want to see.

For HR, it seems not that it's never shown, but that it can take a long time (I've seen 20 minutes) to display, and looks to be 20 minutes old. I've not found a short term work-around for this.

Some people may see these things on various watch faces already, and in the case of rise/set, it could just be they already looked at the watchface from the widget loop while recording an activity, or the watchface could get a location while in preview mode.
  • Haven't been able to get altitude to display on Actiface. Shows up when I scroll through different watch faces but disappears upon selection.

I'm pretty sure that is part of the same problem as the issue with the heart rate data.

It is. All users and developers can really do is wait for a fix in the 5x firmware. Also be sure the FW folks are aware of the problem and actively working on a fix.
  • Has anyone heard any updates on this issue, I'd like to be able to see my HR on the watchface.

It seems to work as expected starting with the 3.21 beta FW. I tried some of mine, as well as NoFrills.

By "expected", it's like other watches. Not real time, but the last 24/7 reading saved by the firmware. (that's all a CIQ watchface can do)
  • Had my 5X about a week, and this is frustrating. Running 3.3. My F3 of course all works perfect. Certain watch faces will allow altitude and rise/set to be grabbed during an activity and seem to retain. Others will grab during preview but after exiting widget loop they're gone. And sometimes the watch face settings will take temporarily and the watch face will restore to its default state. Finally, some watch faces (like gearmin) disappear altogether and require uninstall/reinstall.

Part of what I like about these watches is the flexibility with watch faces. If not fixed soon I'll take advantage of my REI return period and maybe repurchase after sorted out.
