Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?

Just wanted to drop in to say that with RD Pod so far haven't experienced similar dropouts in RD data as I did with HRM-RUN. In the beginning of the run I lost the RD screens for a few very short periods which indicates a minor connection drop, however this didn't happen later during the run. Also the graphs didn't show this to any noticeable extent whereas with the HRM-RUN I had several minute gaps (longest was close to 10minutes), which made the data practically useless.

Another bonus is that you get a separate notificiation icon for RD pod, so you'll know when it's actually connected (or if the connection was lost and reconnected). With HRM-RUN you'd have to hope for best and look if the RD screens were present or not.

First thought the RD Pod would be more fiddly to use, but luckily it's quite easy actually, I'll just feel where my spine is and locate the RD pod there. Another notable difference is that it seems the GCT balance data was more stable when measured lower, albeit trending similarly. This seems more usable as I want to measure balance of my hips / legs, not my upper torso. Other data was very similar to HRM-RUN.

The main reason for me getting the RD Pod was to monitor my L/R balance because I'm recovering from a hip injury. And also to compare the Garmin running power to Stryd. I'm still using Stryd as pace source.

For HR data I'd recommend the Garmin hard plastic strap myself. Easier to take care of and lasts practically forever (pads don't deteriorate). Seems with 3rd party straps some data is calculated wrong, like calories and training load.

    So, to sum it up:
ANT+ regular connection dropouts using Fenix 5S + Soft Strap Premium Heart Rate Monitor (https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/15490)

    Watch info:
    Unit ID: 3946351584
    Software Verios: 7.10 (eb822b2)
    M/N: AA3119-10
    FCC ID: IPH-A3119-10
    IC: 1792A-A311910
GPS: 4.30 (no issues found so far)
    CIQ: 2.4.1
    BLE/ANT/SNS: 4.10
    WHR: 20.03.23
    Advanced heartbeat analytics by Firstbeat
    ETE: 5.3.3.7
    THA: 1.0.0.4

Still at work. After work will exchange the strap for a Polar H10 to see if I can at least get Bluetooth working.
  • So you suggest to wait for new firmare and after when happen again write mail to garmin on the new software ?
Maybe this is issue because I have to many device connect hrtm tri/footpod/tempe

It seems that you have no dropouts from HRM, so the problems with running dynamics seem to come from elsewhere. Try maybe one run without footpod...
It seems also there is a tempe connectivity problem...

There's obviously a huge connectivity issue (amply documented in this forum and elsewhere) with the Fenix 5, which has been fixed in the Forerunner 935, since I owned both.

Basically, we were sold a defective product which would warrant a recall or a class action suit.

It will be hard for Garmin to win me over for a Fenix 5 or whatever, as I'm switching to bluetooth anyway and starting to own several Wahoo devices.

    Caveat emptor

    Hello.
So, today I replaced the Garmin HRM mentiones in my previous post by a Polar H10. It paired well with the watch. In Settings-Sensors and Accessories I can see it and its status so far has always been shown as connected.

But, in the stock watch HRM graph, I already see my first interruption of about one minute or so.

I nees advice - what should I do to be more confident regarding whether or not to take the watch in for replacement? Would trying some sort of custom HRM widget be useful? Could it be that its just the softwarr displaying the interruption in the graph? It is also seen in the mobilr app and on Garmin web.

I wetted the sensors well enough. No devices nearby that could disrupt the Bluetooth connection.

I am however testing this strap and BT connection in resting mode. Should I do an activity and see how it goes?

I wanr to be avle to decide whether or not consider the watch hardware defective....

    Any advice appreciated

Edit: So, again...in settings-sensors ans accessories, the H10 strap status too alternates between connected/searching/not connected.

Could it be because I am resting?? Or is it clearly defective watch hw ?? :(
  • I am having the same dropout issue since day one but mine is a Fenix 5x (I know this is the 5/5s forum) we dont have a post for this failure, My watch is synced with my stryd via Ant+:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2392953288

Take a look to the power graphic. Multiple dropouts, I bought the 5X to avoid the Ant+ issue reported in here. bad luck.

The dropouts are not present when I connect my Stryd via Bluetooth of Stryd offline upload.

    https://www.stryd.com/powercenter/run/5371028673921024

    Conclusion watch failure (Ant+ connectivity)

Regarding the GPS my old tomtom cardio multisport watch is getting better and stronger signal, I tested both 5X and TomTom inside a plane and only the TT got GPS signal.

Regarding Altitud the pilot announced 10k but my watch was showing 8k and sometimes 7k and when we landed my watch was showing negative numbers -234 :-)

By the price this watch 5x suppose to be a precision machine not a failing toy.

    Regards.

  • Regarding the last part of your post: airplanes are pressurized. Barometric altimeter will always report inaccurate elevation inside of a plane and due to big differences in pressure and distance the inaccuracy will remain after landing. Please do not mislead people about accuracy issues in cases where the watch can't be more accurate by design.
  • Has anyone received any recent comments from Garmin about this ant+/bt fix they are supposedly looking to push out? Was told I was added to their email chain but haven't had anything yet.

So up until now I haven't noticed any obvious disconnects other than much shorter Bluetooth range. However, yesterday I noticed my Fenix 5 reconnect to my Tacx which I use for power half way through a training ride and then today my HRM tri looked like it disconnected 10 mins in but looking at the graph my HR climbed to around 170 then dropped to 140 for a few mins before going up to usual 170 again. Not sure if related to connection or just sensor blip. I did wet the sensors first.

This is on my Fenix 5 sapphire.
  • Last Week I got a new Fenix 5 SerNr. 53C004331 from a Waranty change. Today I did a 13km run with a stryd Foot Pod. I had no drop outs.
  • airsnake Hi, would you mind posting a link to that activity .fit file? I’d like to take a look at it. Thanks!
