Sync with GPS - how long it can take?

It looks my new Fenix 5X isn't able to sync the clock (and I believe other data, like temp / elevation etc.) with GPS... Each time I select that option, it just starts, after 3 seconds displays the advisory message on GPS signal strenghts and stays with this message on screen forever. The red line around the face is not moving at all and I believe it should (am I correct?). I've tried mutiple places with no effect. Anyone can advise me how to overcome this issue?
  • Odd

You won't get a lock indoors in most cases since GPS signals are well into the gigahertz range and very weak in terms of power level (since a satellite has limited power to send with!) and thus don't penetrate through building materials well -- and not through metal or concrete to any degree at all.

Not totally relevant to the thread here, but oddly enough, I used to have a Polar V800, and it would actually track inside an enclosed mall. I did this little experiment just for "S&G", because I noticed that one time when I was walking outside a different mall, that it tracked when I had to use the restroom.

I have since sold the V800, and have a fenix 5, but this was interesting.
  • My 5X has no problem getting a GPS lock indoors.. then again neither did my F3 or 920XT
  • My 920 will get a lock indoors. Might take a little longer than outside, but it gets there.
  • Thank you for all the responses!

Maybe I am indeed confused by the watch itself... I used to be vivactive HR user and there were no problems with altitude being shown inside any building (it doesn't seem to have any temperature or pressure sensors, so I can't tell a thing on them). With Fenix 5X my altitude, temperature and pressure values are non-stop the same and what's worse - far from reality. Apart from altitude (which can be manually adjusted / synced with GPS), the temperature and pressure seem to be permanently linked to the Taiwan location, where the original GPS lock was pointing...

I've also ready some related bug info on this forum that supposed to be fixed in 2.91+ firmware - maybe my issues are linked to this one?
  • i do think you are somewhat "confused by the watch" BUT if you are saying that the temperature and barometer are not changing at all then you have a faulty watch. Neither are tied to a GPS location lock and should change as environmental conditions change. The temperature widget is useless on your wrist and will not provide any accurate ready for ambient temperature (unless removed and allowed to sit for a while), but should still change (it is required by the watch to calculate altitude and barometric values).. Altitude and Barometric pressure are tied to each other and, altitude needs to be manually (or based on GPS) calibrated on occasion but, even if not, both should change as you change altitude and weather changes. If Altitude, Barometric pressure and temperature is fixed then your watch is broken. Although you could try a master reset, I would suggest you take it back to where you bought it if you can.

By the way, although it is true that you might get a GPS lock inside, it really depends on what type of building you are in - material, windows (type of glass, direction facing) etc.
