Navigation course : no full screen display available

In ref to previous discussion here : https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?371913-Multiple-map-layers&p=967149#post967149

I confirm : with a navigation course, it is not possible to display the map on full screen : whatever your config is for the map (0 datafield in my case), the bottom of the screen always shows the distance to the end of the course (or distance to the course if you are off course)

Very disappointed because I prefer to enjoy a "full screen" map, that is still not easy to see during a trail :mad:
  • Well, I give up. I must have tried every combination of settings related to map, routing, navigation, data screens (so much so I wonder if I should factory reset to ensure everything is back as it should be) and can never manage to get the map full screen when navigating a course.
  • +1 !
Nevertheless, whatever the config to do to have this full screen map, F5x Garmin UI is unclear (even with 0 field, I have a field displayed... ) !!
If you achieve to determine the right config, I am interested :)

    Hope this works..

Thanks for posting this. I genuinely found it difficult to believe the field could be removed because I have tried absolutely everything (except obviously whatever you did, hahaha).
  • I'm also interested in this thing, it's absurd than i can't remove this data from navigation map!

    Configuration.. So far.

    Run settings
    Data screens
The map screen is actually configured for layout 3 fields. Field 1 lap distance, field 2 lap time, there is no field 3 setting.. None of these fields show on the screen during use!

    Map configuration.
I just have the one map configured for each activity..
Topo for running. Bike for bike.
I've tried lots of third party maps and while the detail can be a lot better, they have been rubbish for routing so far. So stick with garmin.

    Use system settings. Off
    Detail. High

    Routing
    . Activity. Hiking
    . Courses. Follow course

    That's about all I've edited.. I think!
  • Navigate a Course and screens

OK, just got my F5X and have had a quick play with the navigate course features.

Firstly, I downloaded a trail course for my locality as a fit file. It was converted from a tcx file in my desktop SportTracks with Courses Plugin. I included some selected turns. [This is a whole other story.]

There are two ways to use that course: with Navigate or within an App Activity.

    With Navigate:
From watchdace, Start and select Navigate > Courses > [select downloaded course] > Do Course.
When I use this I have a map with no lower screen data field and I get my chosen TBTs as I do the course
(is this what Swoody was doing rather than second method below?).
The only screens I get are those I setup in Navigate settings.
When saved and uploaded this appears as 'Other' in Actvity Type on GC.

    From within an App Activity:
From watchface, Start > Trail Run (or your chosen app).
Before start press long up (menu) > Navigation > Courses > [select downloaded course] > Do course.
Then when you have a GPS lock press start.
The map this time has a lower data field that I can not get rid of (I have tried every which way, including Swoody's).
This time I get all my setup Trail Run screens and the Navigation screens.
When complete it is saved to GC as a Trail Run.

The second method is my prefered as it would I am sure be for others using their chosen app activity. In which case they are stuck with the map screen being severly obscured by a data field. [Edit: by data field I should say information data rather than a prescribed data field that you can set within maps; I set that option to zero. That setting has no effect on the appearance of the data information field that is the issue.]
  • With Navigate:
From watchdace, Start and select Navigate > Courses > [select downloaded course] > Do Course.
When I use this I have a map with no lower screen data field and I get my chosen TBTs as I do the course
(is this what Swoody was doing rather than second method below?).
The only screens I get are those I setup in Navigate settings.
When saved and uploaded this appears as 'Other' in Actvity Type on GC.
Even when doing this I get the distance field at the bottom of the map. Either there is a bug here and depending on "something" you get the field or not, or there is some setting somewhere we do not appreciate which is affecting this.
  • Same I have deleted the field, and re added the field, routing is set to follow course and I still have the distance field. I am on ver 2.90.

Another bug I have noticed is if you start the navigation app and click on a course but don't start the activity, then exit it and then go to walk app, it still thinks you're trying to navigate a course. In practicality it doesn't matter because you have no reason to open the navigation app and not start a course, but it's quite amusing to me. If you're good at beta testing, finding bugs like this is quite easy. Amusingly, whenever I report bugs to Garmin support, they spam me with the "reset your watch" or "update your watch" drivel rather than accept someone who codes might know a little about bugs.

I don't think I will sodomise my brain cells by reporting this but if someone else wants to, be my guest haha.
