OHR Useless With Dark Skin

Disappointing but not unexpected. What is unexpected is the absolute lack of ANY data. I've tried numerous OHR sensors and other then the Apple watch all of them were poor. The F5 is by far the worst. I thought I might have a faulty unit, but I put it on my son (who's bi-racial) and it picked up his HR within a couple of seconds.

I'll give it another day or two, but will be shutting this off soon. Garmin please offer a thinner and lighter F5 without OHR.

Trying to post pictures but keep getting denied

the green lights should be on essentially constantly, it is likely that is the issue since you don't find them on. restart the watch?

Every time I peek under my watch the green leds are on. Imho a difference to the F3hr....
  • Yes and sometimes they flicker very quickly, not something I've noticed on the FR235.

They must the accelerometer though because they go off and stay off when I leave the watch sitting on my desk.

I am willing to entertain the idea that my OHR might be faulty. Question to the F5 owners, is the light on your OHR on ALL the time? Mine is off almost every time I check it. It's even off sometimes when I turn to the HR widget.

This has got to be it, the light should be on every time you peek 24/7. Without the light on there is no way for it to get a HR and you would expect to see 0.

Mine is also on every time I peak (F5 of course)
  • When I take a peak the oHR is generally flickering. If I launch the HR widget or actually press a button it goes solid.
  • Well the light is definitely not on 24/7. I've even seen it turn off while peaking at it. Only concern is that it did pick up my son's HR pretty easily (when it was on)

I'll try a factory reset, hoping not to have to exchange one so soon.
  • I think I have a bum device. After reset I did get a warning to reposition the watch on my wrist which I've never seen before, but the lights rarely stay on for more then a few seconds (even when I'm on the HR widget which should keep the light on).

Ugh, haven't had to do a RMA since the 910xt
  • So no one else has the flickering/fast flashing of the leds in "standby" mode ? Since I don't see that on the FR235 I thought it was a way for Garmin to save energy and get their claimed 1/2" 24x7 update rate...for which I have no use frankly and would prefer better performance when running but I suppose there's a market for 24x7 trackers.
  • WEBVAN you are not alone, when I'm wearing the watch every time I 'peak' under the watch the green light is always on with that fast flickering. The only time I see that stop is when I take the watch off and it stops doing the rapid flashing after 4-5 seconds. The watch then seems to switch to a mode where the green light comes on solidly occasionally, which is I guess it searching for a HR whilst also not killing the battery if the user has just taken the watch off.
