F5 with bands from F3 :-)

I got my F5 two days ago and like it very much but I miss the size of the F3, I know, strange right!?

Actually I like very much the bands from F3, being wider it helps the watch to stay firmer and feels comfortable on the hand, so I thought maybe I can cut a little bit and make a band from F3 to work on F5 - and here is the result..

It feels much more stable right now on my wrist.

Worth to mention that this band was bought from china with 2 USD and was much more better than the original F3, especially in terms of flexibility and smoothness, almost like silk feel. The new F5 bands are not that flexible and silk in feel...
  • One word of caution for those cutting their straps to fit a narrower lug width:

By simply cutting the silicone or plastic straps, you are creating initiation sites for the propogation of cracks. This is particularly the case near the lugs where the cuts are made. It will be much easier for a crack to propogate on a cut strap and ultimately fail than one that has not been cut.

    FYI.

I am sure you are right, I will pay attention to the band over time.
  • Yes, though you can find cheaper less than 3, there are many sellers but they all have the same quality.

Will keep an eye on them, I've got a dark red Moko on order. Cracks shouldn't be an issue with a clean cut and there's still a lot of rubber left.

    Thank you for the tip!

I have here plenty of split Nato straps from my F3. I think, cutting a Nato strap would not have the mentioned problem since it is a woven fabric.
But I will be cautions and keep an eye on the strap!
  • Brilliant idea!

I had not thought of this until I read your post. I pre-ordered both 5x and 5, which has given me the ability to compare. I have LOVED my F3 (non-HR) and worn it as a daily watch (work, sports, formal/casual, mowing the yard, etc., etc.) for the last two years. It has taken me through two Boston marathons, one New York, and hundreds of trail/street runs and races, swims, skiing, paddle-boarding..... you get the idea. My favorite watch ever! After getting used to it, It's size was something I never thought about. I became proud of the comments such as "wow, that's a big watch".

Then comes the 5x. It arrived first and I liked it. I could notice the increase in size, and it was just enough that it pushed the comfort level just over the edge for me. Although the the idea of more storage and better processor makes since, I'm not personally in the wilderness enough to need the maps (my iPhone does way better for the navigation that I need) and the actual screen seems kind of dwarfed by the analog outer circle and bezel. New style silicone band seems nice, although a little "stretchy" and needs tightening after a few minutes into a run.

A few days later the 5 arrives. Noticeable difference in weight when on the wrist, and significantly more comfortable to me than the 5x. Just seems to melt into the wrist. Although without them side-by-side, the watch itself seems close to what I have been used to with my 3. BUT, the band looks and feels less "chunky" and too thin for my liking. Its amazing how much thinner the 4mm difference is, at least to me.

So I see this original post and head straight to the garage with an exacto knife and an old F3 band. Voila! You can see my pics. I think the width of the band brings the 5 very close to what I've always loved about my F3. It also allows me to keep my retrofitted road ID (actually designed for a Fitbit Blaze but fits perfectly over the 26mm Garmin bands). And as I studied the QuickFit band for the 5x, it looks like you could trim 2mm off each side at the lugs (same as I've done on the F3 band pictured) on a 26mm without affecting the Quick-Fit mechanism itself. This would give you the option to fit 26mm Quickfits on the F5.... the best of both worlds for me!

Your story sounds like my situation, just that in my case F5X has not arrived yet and, before reading your post, I was thinking that F5X will fit better on my wrist. And I do not have a large hand, but just F3 felt so natural over those years. But now I read your post and that F5X is actually that its increase size is pushing the comfort level and I am in doubt ... again... I never thought that the extra 1mm or so in thickness compared to F3 could make that difference but I can feel that we think the same so I trust your feeling... So thanks for sharing this.
