Although I have the Sapphire 5 coming my way I'd still like to get a screen protector for it. Working in an industrial environment and doing sports that will mean it will get banged around I just don't want to have to worry about it.
Just ordered Brotect myself, got one for my garmin 735xt which fits fine and was easy to apply. Heard good things about it as well (and pretty cheap). You only get the screenprotector itself btw, no alcohol/cloth/other stuff.
Is a protector needed on a sapphire glass? It shouldn't be easy to scratch it and if you hit it really hard with an object, so it shatters, does a protector help?
I'm not poking, I'm just interested, since I'm waiting for a F5 Sapphire too and I wonder, if I should get a protector too.
depends on how much violence you put your F5 through :) ....personally don't want one on mine and I do road, trail, XC and Fell running. Unless it gets scratched by bramble thorns, I don't see any need for one.

Also recommended after having it on my FR235 for several months, it's invisible and hasn't picked up a single scratch unlike the savvies I used previously. Seems to help with fingerprints too.
I've been using this since brand new on my F3 and it's great. I wear my watch as a daily driver and tend to bang it into stuff. It's nice to not have to worry. My previous watch was an Ambit2, and ended up with a scratched face that drove me crazy. I would recommend the IQ Shield, and will certainly slap one on my F5 when it comes out of the box.

Realistically no. It's almost impossible to scratch sapphire. Almost all of my watches have a sapphire crystal and I've never scratched one. If you go on WUS/TZ/etc. it's still incredibly rare to see actual scratches on sapphire (most scratches are on the AR coating, not the sapphire itself).
With regards, to increasing impact resistance to prevent shattering/cracking, a film style protector will offer zero protection. A glass protector may add a smidge of protection, but realistically I don't think it'll do anything with regards to increasing impact resistance.
tl;dr the whole point of buying a sapphire crystal is so you don't have to use protectors
