I've had live segments working for the past year with my Edge 520, and I can confirm that the live segments arn't working on the F5 at the moment (at least for running, I've not tried on the bike yet).
You may be right that does ring a bell, but then something else in my head is telling me it works the other way around..
As in, if I upload a course to my edge it will upload all the Strava segments contained within it, not just ones you have starred.

They were working fine for me on two runs over the weekend; including a in run notification that you are approaching a starred segment and a 'special' segment datafield screen when in Segment. Have you checked that segment alerts are on in the run app settings? Also worth checking the GARMIN/SEGMENTS folder on the watch when plugged in to a PC/Mac to check that the segment files have been sent to the watch.
So you need to be doing a loaded Route to get Segments?? I was under the impression that any run would have Segments pop up. Yes, I have SEGMENTS turned on on F5. Segment folder is empty. Shouldn't there be a GARMIN/STRAVA folder too for Strava Segments? I would think the GARMIN/SEGMENT folder is for Garmin Connect running segments....
I called Garmin. Fenix 5 series is NOT compatible with Strava Live at this time. I think people here are getting confused with GARMIN Segments in GC vs Strava Segments on Strava.com. Even Strava DOES NOT list the Fenix 5 series as compatible with Strava Live yet.....
I didn't need to be in a loaded route and all I can say is that they are working on my F5 unit. The difference is that I can see a list of files populated in my GARMIN/SEGMENTS folder. Have you tried syncing using Garmin Express to see if that gets the segments to transfer?

I think you were given duff information. If you take a look at this thread in the 5X forum you will see comments indicating the Garmin engineers are working on a Strava live segments problem and have it working themselves. And as Crispin indicates, some people have it working just fine.
LOL 600 bukcs for Garmin with strava segments and another 60 every year, to be able to use it. Quite disapointing :(
Yes, its always disappointing when you have to pay a second service to use the second service.
The strava segments were implemented because paying strava users asked Garmin to do it.
