My silver black 5s has arrived

It's here and it's looking very subtle for an outdoor watch.

You aren't comparing apples with apples.

Fenix 5 compares to Fenix 3. Fenix5 is still smaller than the Fenix3, but is a closer comparison; they've just improved the technology within.

I have both the 5 and the 5S and will be returning the 5 - it's too big for my wrist. However in slate-grey/black the 5 looks pretty good; change the band if less outdoor-oriented is required.

The silver 5S I have looks more like a toy smartwatch and is really more like an 'upgraded' 735XT (or the much rumoured 935xx that is not yet out.)

As with you, I prefer the 5S due to it's size and will accept the battery compromise. If I could have it, I'd have the 5-style bezel on the 5S in slate-grey, as it instantly looks like a watch worth double the price.

Speaking of which: the fact the price of the 5 and 5S is currently the same is ridiculously scandalous! 5S should be £50 less, at the least.

What makes you feel there is a big difference in quality? Obviously "heavier" things feel more solid but the 5S being smaller is 25% less weight than the 5, does that contribute? They say the buttons feel more flimsy? Well that isn't great? Is it the look of the bezel or the proportionately bigger lugs vs. face size, because I don't "see" a quality difference looking at photos and aside from weight and buttons what is there?

PS: A search about the 935 and you'll see many, many photos of it are out there now and it looks like a 735 mostly. Seems plastic, round face.
  • It looks fantastic. I have very thin wrists for most men, just 6.25in and the 45mm 235/735 takes up the whole width of my wrist and looks just ok as a sports watch. the 47mm Fenix 5 would be way oversized for me with the lugs extending beyond my wrist which is the big fashion no-no and frankly thats important to me with the new fenix. for me the significance of the fenix series is that a do everything fitness watch gets blended with higher end elegance and build quality so you can wear it from the boardroom to a triathlon and for me the Fenix 5S looks like a real typical mens watch which makes sense since nearly all men's Rolexes for example are 42mm. the larger Fenix 5 and 5X look awesome for rugged sport watches but the oversized look and exposed screws will always kind of make it clear just what the watch is, a sports watch, and i'm looking forward to something a bit more subtle.

i have a CT order in the USA for the black/black sapphire 5S which should look like this on me...

Couldn't have put it better! The 5S will suit perfectly for all my sports and day-to-day business meetings, that's what I expect from this price range. Will order one soon!
I wonder if there are any differences in GPS accuracy between 5 and 5S

Well all I meant is to compare is the size. In my opinion I get almost all the same features as the fenix 3 in a nicer smaller size.

A metal cheap casio versus a plastic cheap casio. Both rated to 10ATM, but one just has a better feel to it. If another comparison would help: a cheap generic android device that feels plasticky and doesn't look as robusy versus an iphone 5S. There's something the look and feel that also happens to impart quality - which I can confirm having gone through many of the former and still on the original of the latter :-)

As I've mentioned the 5S non-sapphire has shiny metal buttons and a shiny metal bezel. It screams 'smart watch'. The sapphire version does this less so, thanks to the darker metal material. It's still pretty smart-watchy, but at least can get away with it more. But I was already pushing my own limit of funds to choose the 5S, given what I use it for, and prefer brotect screen protectors to sapphire, due to experiences with glass and sapphire smashing in the past.

You couldn't by any chance show us a comparison pic where I can judge the height and lug difference between your 5s and F3? Not super clear on the DCR pics.

Had a 5s sapphire/black on order from HRM, canceled and got the 5s silver/black instead. Couldn't wait and it'll be here on Monday the 3rd of April. :) Btw if anyone else is looking they have one more 5s silver/black in stock. https://www.heartratemonitorsusa.com/products/garmin-fenix5?variant=34046294662
