How does the new fenix 5 wrist heart rate sensor compare with the fenix 3hr? Improved performance or the same?
Sounds like you're new to oHR ? As mentioned above (and about everywhere :rolleyes:) oHR can only really be used reliably when you're static and for easy runs when it's not cold...

How does one force an update to v2.4 software?
My 5S is on 2.0 and no amount of synching or button actions seems to suggest any update is available...

I used a garmin HRM strap with the AHR-datafield. By this, both tracks (OHR and belt-HR as the auxiliary heartate (iq datafield)) are recorded and are nearly spot on all the time. For regular use very sufficient. For track workouts you may rely on a strap but for daily training runs its very useful...
Better as my experience with my F3H3. Im getting more and more happy with my F5! :o
