GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?
  • What I'm after ? Pretty obviously a typo...fixed.
  • Ah 5s tracks. Not seen any of them yet; I think they're all still too busy taking selfies ;)
  • @ChevronLugs - nice hike, saving this for this summer as I'm planning to get back out there ;-) Not knowing the area it's hard to tell if it was good or bad ?
It's a good hike. If you're up for it, I can share an 18 mile in that same area I did last year as a trail run. That long route had some really good views.

@all - has anyone seen an F5s track being shared ? We've had mostly the F5 tracks by multiple users, F5x tracks shared by
NYanakiev7 but no F5s ? Since it has a completely different bezel I wonder if it would maybe perform closer to the FR935 ?
Isn't the 5s listed as having a stainless bezel, same as 5 and 5X? If so, I bet there won't be that much difference.

So we have a new SW/GPS version to test, let's see !
    Woohoo!
  • A stainless bezel, ah yes, thinner though, so who knows, but let's see what v2.90 brings to the F5 !

Sorry by "good" I was referring to the track ;-) Thanks for suggesting the 18 miles track but that's probably going to be too much for me ;-)
  • So I traveled out of state for a half marathon this past weekend and sharing that track. Now typically I don't rely on GPS feedback much during a race so I'm not super critical of detailed analysis. It's always good to get some fundamental confirmation though so that I can have confidence in the watch when it does matter. Comparing distance against a known certified course allows me to trust the feedback I'm getting during pace driven workouts. That's when I have to be able to trust the guidance that the watch provides.

    My set up:
    610 - Left Wrist
    F5S - Left Wrist
F3 - Right Wrist, 3 o'clock forward (some would say upside down!)

All units set at smart recording using GPS only.
Hadn't updated to the most current firmware since I was travelling/racing. Upgraded to 2.9 now but this track occurred previously.

The 610 came in at 13.09. The F3 came in at 13.14. The F5S came in at 13.18.
All remarkably accurate for how I use it.
I don't choose to nit pick about the minor accrual differences. .04 translates to around 64 meters. Over 13 miles, that's good enough for me. Whether that's left/right wrist behavior in cornering or whatever.....like I said, I tend not to nit pick over minor differences. I also don't dwell on the map track. If I run a half marathon and my watch records 13.18 I'm solid and don't have to worry about niggles and wiggles. I leave that for everybody else to debate.

As I noted in other threads, mygpsfiles doesn't accept the original fit file of the 5. That means I have to export a gpx equivalent and use that instead. My preference would be to use original data but it is what it is. mygpsfiles only displays one decimal place so the 5 comes in at 13.2. The 610 and 3 register 13.1. Also noted that mygpsfiles recalculates distance based on it's own algorithm of the gps track points.

OK - not quite ready to challenge FlipStone to a throwdown but I had a solid day and the F5S was up to the challenge!

Alright....my contribution to the accuracy discussion. The fenix line has been dismissed as having less than ideal accuracy but my performance has always been stellar and I don't have any reservations or qualms about gps accuracy at all! Rock solid. The fenix line delivers premium accuracy for me and the 5 series in certainly right in step with that.

  • I've been following the GPS accuracy threads, and will add my own 935 vs fenix 5 (2.72 beta) comparison, with GLONASS on, and 1 second recording. What I've been seeing is that although they're close, the 935 gives me smoother tracks. The fenix also appears more likely to stray.

Updated 935 vs fenix 5, both updated to firmware 2.9. GLONASS on, 1 second recording. Again, pretty close but the 935 has the edge.

Same jittery bits as my F5 does, looks like the 935 had a lot less trouble staying straight
  • andi, what exactly were you expecting? The TomTom was not 'far' more accurate. Both of your devices measured exactly 5km. Zoomed into 50m the TomTom path looks smoother but it also had you in the water and in a building at one point, the F5 did not.

Same test with 1sec, much smoother now but I still give the edge to the tomtom. The F5 has a few spots where it goes jittery and in general it makes the turns a bit later, lagging behind and missing the path.
Not a massive difference but it's a shame a £425 watch is slightly worse than a £65 one. The 935 above looks pretty good too.
  • And I'd agree with you if the feature set was the same, but the TomTom can't do a fraction of the things that I need.
