GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?

Hi WEBVAN, this is really bad. I should test mine.

Can I know whether you are using Fenix 5X or Fenix 5 ?

    Thanks

The run shows some of the problems I saw, poor multipath mitigation when there are buildings on one side :

    and my FR235/F5 comparison :

No EPO here either but that's only useful if you get started without having a good view of the sky, it won't impact accuracy otherwise.
  • I would think having no EPO would affect accuracy. Going from no lock to a 'good enough' green ring, probably only takes 4 satellites and that means if you lose sight of one of them you get these drifting errors if you start quickly after the green ring appears. With EPO you should be able to get more satellites and a stronger lock quicker so it should be more robust.

im no expert, but if you are seeing no EPO then perhaps waiting 5 minutes might improve the plot. By the way, Garmin should fix this as it sounds like a bug but for those of you having issues I would experiment a bit and see if this is what's causing it.

  • Morning everyone!
I am the guy who posted the above track in the 5X forum.

Did the same run this morning, not impressed. Hopefully Garmin can sort this out quickly:

EDIT: FYI, EPO now says current (unlike yesterday when I synced via wired&bluetooth connection)

Here is the same run from yesterday, EPO was expired

  • Will you not see this type of anomaly with all GPS watches? I think expecting 100% accuracy is a little unrealistic. I checked my last vivoactive hr run for example and I don't remember running through walls but my tracks show very similar deviations to what you have here.

worth ringing Garmin support in the UK and logging a fault IMHO so they can start to work on it. Looks like you have a great "testing" loop that is repeatable.
  • Here's my first activity. The only places were it wandered significantly were next to a large metal object, the Angel Of The North sculpture (a small wander) and past two tower blocks (where the track briefly crossed to the other side of the road).

Looking at the same route from my F3, the F5 looks a little better. The F3 struggled in the same places but also had issues elsewhere. Measuring this route on Google Earth, I would say the F5 has it in terms of distance accuracy.

I know a sample of one doesn't mean much, but it seems ok so far in my opinion. Not the best, but ok.
  • Looks quite OK to me, Chris. Do you run with a F5 or a 5X?

.. and past two tower blocks (where the track briefly crossed to the other side of the road).

The old track of the F3 was affected much more by these tower blocks. I would say (from this single activity) that the F5 has improved a lot.

(From poor to middle range accuracy... ;):rolleyes:)

edit: I took a look at google for "Angel of the North".... hey! What is this!?!? It's monstrous! What a superior GPS signal reflector!! :)

Looking at your previous activities on GC recorded with your VA HR you were getting similar issues which (looking more at the environment on Google Earth) is possibly just the combination of occasion to occasion constellation position variance combined with multipath effects of the tall buildings around the dock. Your track distances for the same route are very consistant though.

Some will be better than others but yes, the urban environment with lots of buildings and constantly changing obscuration would be challenging for anything.

I may be sounding like a F3/F5 apologist here but ultimately this is a fitness watch, not a surveying tool.
