GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?
  • Back from a run in my GPS proving grounds. Trees, fire road, single track, peaks, valleys, rock walls; its got it. This place consistently stresses any GPSr device I take there. I'm genuinely impressed with both devices. What's even more impressive is, the fenix 5 HR kept a consistent lock. I use a Rhythm+ with the Spartan.

fenix 5: 2.72, GPS+GLONASS, 1 second. Plenty of GPS soak time after installing 2.72 yesterday, and more as I was getting ready at the trailhead.
Spartan Ultra: 1.8.26, GPS+GLONASS, best (1 second). Same for Spartan Ultra with the GPS lock while getting ready.

    which matched trail better?

CL - Thanks for the post - these are the two devices I am most interested in (own neither). Would you say one or the other of F5 or SSU you prefer for keeping track of you actual position, rather than just total length of track or other summaries? In other words, which keeps you on the track you are following better, or are they both ok, or both not so good.

    thanks.

Based on that, if you stayed on the trail, the Fenix was more accurate?

    Advice

    Hi,

Seeking advise regarding the F5. I run in an area with tall buildings with mirrors/glass. Think something like Manhattan.

I just bought the F5 and it's struggling alot in this area. It looks like the watch is teleporting all around when it loses the signal. What are my options at this stage?
    1. Should I disable GPS? Can it track accurately distance without GPS?
    2. Should I use a foot-pod as well as the GPS? My concern with the footpod, is that if the watch is switching to the built in accelerometer when GPS is lost, the technically the teleporations should not take place. Will the footpod overcome this obstacle? Technically, if the watch was switching over, then I shouldn't get these teleportations at all. The watch should have some checks in place to determine whether the data is legitimate or not. For example, there should be an alarm bell when you're running the 1KM in less than a minute. How will that be any different with the foot-pod? If the foot pod will resolve these issues, then which one should I get?
    3. Should I go for a forerunner? I'm guessing that the plastic casing will improve GPS signal.
    4. Should I opt for another watch? If you were living in the NYC area, what watch would you wear for mapping capabilities?

Many thanks for your response and feedback. I'm a first time Garmin user. My previous experience running was with phones. I had no idea that these types of issues could occur. I'm now stuck with a good watch that doesn't fit my needs :(
  • Fenix 5X vs FR935

    Hi everyone! Here is a comparison between my Fenix 5X and FR935- both watches were set to every second recording, GPS+GLONASS and worn on my left arm;
This was meant to be a longer run but I made a wrong turn and lost the path.

Fenix 5X setup- HRM-Run+Stryd, watch calibrated to 5m of altitude prior to start
FR935 setup- optical HR only, watch calibrated to 5m of altitude prior to start

  • Which version does the 5X has?
To me, the track is just fine

Thanks for those. There isn't a lot to choose between the tracks, except quite late on when you're coming south down Horn Link Way, when the F5 veers about 30m to the left and back again. Poking around Google Street View suggests you're running past a 10-storey building there, so it has some kind of excuse :)
  • Indeed. I think that both watches did a really good job here! Elevation data looks great too.

I am on the latest beta- the GPS firmware update seems to have helped a lot! (my hike yesterday looks really great too)
