GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?

did I get you right that I can have two HF-tracks both in one Fit-File?

How very cool!! I must try.... Very nice feature, because I always wanted to check the F3H3 much more closely but usually ran with my scosche belt because on the very few occasions without the belt the hf data was very disappointing...

Unfortunately I must taper a bit for my next half marathon on sunday.... no more runs tomorrow...
  • Admittet - I'm a bit concerned! Yet again this is the very first real life testing, so it could also be just a single case.

But based on your description of the track, reviewing the tracking F5 did and with knowing there where no leafes on the trees, I'd bet once Spring starts, F5 may have issues as well. I'm sure on coming firmwares will adress this - well they should. But it's a bit concerning the 910XT was significantly better (try to zoom in and compare) given the conditions.

    Let's see how others report...

Yes it's very handy! Check out its forum topic as there are a few "tricks".

You're right. But have a closer look at the 910xt track running into the woods and coming back. Also not on track. But the f5 is not better, agreed.
Better than my old f3 in any case. But the f3 is sold, I can't compare anymore...
  • Here is one of the problems I saw, very poor performance from the Fenix 5, frankly unforgivable to allow that for a company with Garmin's experience...now I never used an F3 but based on comments here it seems it wasn't a top GPS performer either ? All my forerunners have been really good overall, the FR235 particularly.

Yes, the older Garmins are better by far.

The so called "overthetop" exoantenna of the F3 resulted in the worst gps-tracks ever. Now it seems better, but not on level of the 235. (metal case compared to plastics)
My friend has got a 235 and his tracks were alway very accurate. On open fields, the F3 tracks were acceptable too but near buildings you would notice jumps in your tracks.

At least, the distance measurements improved a lot after some firmware updates. The F3 became "usable" for distance accuracy. Still, the tracks looked always lousy.

I seems to be that the F5 offers not such a big advance as everyone (me included) hoped for.... Let's wait for more results.
  • Hum...I really wasn't expecting to have to deal with GPS issues  I need it mostly for running and for that the FR235 has been very reliable, unlike my friend's 920's or 225's. I got it mostly for the advanced training features but I can probably live without them...

Sad to see some pretty obvious tracking issues in those recordings :(

A sample size of 1 is obviously not enough to form a judgement but it feels a lot like when I first started to see the same issues with my F3... and months later the issues were not resolved.

Such a shame that the F3 and F5, basically the flagship and most premium (and expensive) sports watch they make is still being out performed that some of their oldest and cheapest watches.
  • My fenix 3 have a moderate accuracy but it could be better, Although is not bad now.
I hope that my fenix 5 will have una good accuracy, it is the most important for me.
It is true that is the first stable firmware and there are days better and worst.
The suunto spartan had bad gps accuracy when it was released and today it have better accuracy but not how other old watches.
I hope that garmin fixed the fenix 3 problems, they had two years for it.

FWIW - the 735 has been very good for a long time. Very consistent, very accurate - it just always works!

And in fact - on a level I was expecting F5 to be at (given the history - F3, 920 especially just after initial release).
