GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?
  • Today was my first training with the fenix 5. It was raining, the sky was cloudy and the temperatura 10ºC. No mountain, buildings or trees.
    My training was the same that the two weekens ago. 20´(4:40-4:50) - 20´ (4:25-4:40) - 20´ (4:10-4:20).
    GPS and record every second.

With the fenix 3, I had good accuracy most of the time all days.
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1620857021 (2 weeks ago) GPS and record every second.

With the fenix 5. regular accuracy.
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1632949944 (today) GPS and record every second.

I don´t worry because is the first day, I think that the sensors and gps need autocalibrate and the weather was bad.

    - HR was very bad, My max HR is 165bpm and I should not have more than 155bpm max today because it was a training light. The Hr was half the time over 160bpm.
    - Real pace was very bad. Impossible to follow the training as well. Long time to update the pace and when it should go fast, it always gave me about 10-20 seconds slower. That has never happened to me with fenix 3.

I love the fenix 5, is beautiful and powerful. I think it will improve in future practice.

You might want to confirm that you have every second recording on. Your track takes 3-4 second jumps for every data point and doesn't look like it's recording every second.

I've looked again and it's every second.

Went for my first run with the F5 this afternoon.

Needless to say the GPS leaves something to be desired.

Maybe a fluke and poor satellite coverage at that time of day 4:52pm EDT:

I started and stopped at the exact same spot, but the start is wrong (end is correct).

I'll try again tomorrow same route (thought probably different time of day) to compare.
  • Definitely looks like watch wasn't fully aligned with satellites initially. I give my watch a minute or so if a green circle before I start running to ensure solid gps lock!

Garmin Connect doesn't plot all the points in the track, to speed things up. If you want to see the exact recorded track, you need to download it and use third party software.
  • Just got my F5. I'm kind of nervous because my F3 has been pretty much stellar all around (GPS performance included)
  • But was the distance correct?

with that erratic start with the first 20% being totally off... no way distance is right. it really looks like it had a bad position to start, i'm not trying to generalize and it may be he did this BUT...

    1. once you get a satellite lock stay still for 30-60 seconds to get a much more solid lock.
    2. insure 1 second recording, perhaps even turn on GPS-GLOSNASS.

should help a lot, the fenix 5 got the plot about 20% into his short run and seemed to be accurate after that.
  • GPS vs GPS & Glonass

What's the true difference? Pro's vs cons? Is one favored more for road vs trail and vice versa?
