Fenix 5 not wear it and use as bike computer?

Can I use the Fenix 5 and put it at the back of my saddle bag on my bicycle?

I want to get rid of my Edge 520. (The reason being is now I can now track my bicycle, run, walk execise and vacation tracking.)

The Fenix 5 will be fed with Cadence and PRM sensor and my chest strap HRM.

what some are going to do (myself included) is record my cycling on BOTH the fenix 5S & my Edge 820. the Edge 820 will be removed from my Garmin Connect account so it will primarily be the Fenix 5 giving the rides to Garmin Connect and all my fitness activities from running to biking to swimming will be in one place, one device, and things like the new "Training Load" feature of the Fenix will be accurate since it has all the data.

This is what I do with currently with my Edge 520 and My Fenix 3. The main reason I started doing this was because the 520 supports the Varia radar and the Fenix 3 does not. I plan to keep doing this after I upgrade the watch even though the Fenix 5 will support the Varia since the larger screen with many more data fields is much more useful to me on the bike than the watch on the handlebars.

Boydosaurus, since the Wahoo sensor can broadcast ANT+ there should be no issue pairing it with a Fenix 5. The Fenix 3 can already track all the things you listed aside from optical heart rate for the non HR models.
  • I'm also planning to use the Fenix 5 as a bike computer. I'm currently using my phone which is attached on the stem with a Quad Lock mount. I also have a Wahoo Cadence sensors which can broadcast in ANT+ and Bluetooth.

My question my be oblivious and similar to OP however I'm wondering if I could use the Fenix5 to track Distance, speed, elevation, GPS and Heartbeat (I'll keep it on my wrist) along side the Wahoo Cadence sensor so this way I could completely get rid of my phone altogether and have complete metrics of my bike rides?

    Thanks for help!

I use the Wahoo RPM cadence sensor with my F3 with no problems so you should be good to go with the F5.

Oh yea, you will most definitely be able to. The interesting tidbit with the F5(S/X) will be the ANT+ support AND Bluetooth smart (BTS) support. The F3(HR) only support ANT+. With this added support on the F5 it opens up so much more options (and sensors) to the watch. I don't know though if you could leave the phone behind altogether. I don't know how much the watch stores info, nor do I know if (or how) the wahoo cadence sensor reports data and if Garmin makes sense of it. I know my Tick X supported advanced running dynamics for example, but Garmin didn't take those in as metrics (like the HRM-Run/TRI). I am going to assume it won't, but that might be something you contact support for. I know that my Stryd reports data to GC, but only after downloading a app from CiQ.

Thanks for the info. One last question regarding Fenix 5, Wahoo sensor & Phone connectivity etc...

If I'm keeping the watch on my wrist and also keeping my Phone on my stem, would I be able to transmit all of the data from the Fenix 5 + Wahoo Sensor to my Android Phone and see it on my phone in real-time instead of having to look at my watch? Mainly Speed, Distance, Cadence, HR without using my phone GPS and sensors but only using the watch & Wahoo Sensor? Basically just using my phone as a bigger screen.

I'm Boydosaurus btw. Using wife account.

I don't think so. I don't think the Fenix will retransmit live data other than the optical HR and one of the downsides of Bluetooth is I think most Bluetooth devices (like a Bluetooth HR strap) can only be paired with one device at a time, the advantage of ANT+ is any number of devices can read the signal simultaneously.
  • The only way I could see to do that would be to send a Live Track link to yourself and then display that on your phone. I would think that would have a noticeable amount of lag to it though.

Then why the 820? Simple the screen and form factor. I will still use it as the device I actually look at riding the bike (maps etc.) and I will record the rides in case for any reason the data from the Fenix isn't tracked correctly or it drops signal from my power meter etc. It would then be a simple thing to manually upload the training file from the 820 to my Garmin Connect account if the Fenix one is bad, but most of the time I imagine the 820 will just be a visual head unit of what I'm doing on a ride and can share the real time data coming from the bike sensors and my HR strap during the ride.

Like you, i ordered the fenix 5. However i use already the edge 820. I will use them together on the bike. The 820 to read the data (power, fc , cadence)and the f5 to register them and to be available all the day long for other activities. I believe it can be complementary. Do you think it can be a problem to use them simultaneously ? . Furthermore , on Garmin connect, i suppose i will have to choose one or other. Is it right ?
  • It's certainly possible to use many devices simultaneously when biking:

Great for comparing accuracy and consistency of tracking and data recording.

In Garmin Connect you will have to choose one device for the Bike activity record, but you can keep the records from the other devices, just re-name the activity to "Uncategorized" and you will be able to review all the data without the results interfering with your overall cycling data summaries.

  • I have that quarter turn thing on my Edge 520.

Will that thing work on a Fenix 5 when you take the bands off?
  • I added one of those quarter-turn thingies to a fenix 3 charging cradle:

Looks like it might work for the fenix 5, but can't tell for sure:
