While I'm willing to pay a premium for design and features, $599.99 as a starting point is just too steep for me.

exactly my thoughts! That's flagship smartphone money :D and i use/need my smartphone more than my "fitness"-multisport watch!
  • The gyroscope is an interesting element, adding better GPS to ultratac, at least this is what they promise.
  • Nice! I have no plans for an Ironman in the next 18 months so may go for the 5S this time around. I still love my F3 so will wait until these are available at REI before getting one.
  • I'm happy to see that the standard F5 is smaller than the F3 while still getting the better display. While I think the F5S is a nice looking watch my old eyes want as many pixels and as much contrast as they can get.
  • Is the standard F5 any smaller? The garmin specs for Fenix 5 look the same dimensions as my Fenix 3... The 5S is certainly a smaller diameter, I didn't see the thickness off hand (which, to me is the bigger issue with the F3 size)

I also think the cost is going to keep me from upgrading. If they had a non-HR for the price the F3 non-HR started at, I'd probably consider it. Guessing selling my F3 now would net... $200-$250? so I'd still be in for a bit here.

I use wifi so limited that I question if I'd generally miss it, but when I do use it it is because the BLE connection continuously fails due to some file oddity (it seems). wifi syncing in this case flushes out the problem.

Maps... only on the huge and most costly one, bummer. Probably wouldn't use it much myself but it is always nice to have new options :)

Does anyone know if the auto route creation has any concern for "good" cycling or running roads? Or just picks roads that exist (maybe busy, no path or sidewalks?). Auto route creation is kind of useless of it isn't "sport aware" honestly because I'd likely only use it in slightly unfamiliar areas.
  • According to the Garmin site the 5S is 42mm (smaller than current FR series), 5 is 47mm (a little larger than current FR), and 5X 51mm (about the same as F3)

The 5S also seems to have the same display as the F3 where the 5 & 5X get the higher resolution, more colors display.
  • Beta Over

So all this Beta activity for the F3, was it purely for R&D for the F5? When the F5 is released will it be EPIX time for the F3?

As another poster mentioned, thickness is pretty key too. The 5X is 0.5mm thicker than the Fenix 2 and 1.5mm thicker than the F3. I did own the F2 for a short time and remember it feeling pretty darned large on my wrist, so much so that I returned it, so unfortunately the 5X will be a no-buy for me. The F5 is 0.5 thinner than the F3, so I've pre-ordered it from CleverTraining but may have buyers remorse long before it ships, since I'm happy enough with my F3HR. My wife, on the other hand, will hopefully like her new F5S.

I hear 'ya brother. I've been very happy with my non-HR Fenix 3 that I just got (as a refurb) for about $300. I do like the new watches, but in no rush to get one. Maybe in a few years when a refurb Fenix 5X is around $300 again. LOL! 😆

    1. Have they made the GPS accuracy less sh**e?
    2. Have they managed to crack HRV measurement from the optical sensor yet?

I will probably stick with the F3 until HRV can be measured from the wrist. That is the real killer upgrade IMO.

Wifi only on the Sapphire ayy? I smell sh**e. There is no way they are; 1. NOT using a combined 2.4GHz bluetooth/wifi transceiver chip. 2. Running a second production line for such a minor PCB change.
