Distance accuracy

Hi all,

Today I've observed something quite interesting regarding total distance of an activity.

I've tested gps version 2.20 vs 2.24 by doing the same 5k walk twice on the same day. The gps version 2.20 had a lot of drunken man syndrome which was not present in version gps 2.24. A clear improvement. So I was expecting the total distance for 2.20 to be longer than for 2.24. However, both were exactly the same (5.3k).

However, I've imported both tracks to Basecamp and the real distance for 2.20 was 5.5km while for 2.24 was still 5.3km. The drunken man syndrome equated to an extra 0.2km. Therefore it looks like Garmin applies some sort of smart algorithm to estimate the true distance. That's why when people look at Strava vs Garmin it looks like the Fenix 5 is always tracking shorter while in fact might be more accurate.

This is just a 1 off test but there might be something here.

Let see what others think.

I've experienced the same thing.  Here I thought purchasing a known brand like Gamin at the price point, would make me think these issues wouldn't exist.

  • Hola, mi impresión del gps del fenix 5s plus, siempre mide por encima de la medida real, versión de gps 2.60,

I am experiencing a distance not recording on my Fenix5x+ ,despite that its green and when I press start it just doesn't record the distance, can someone help me with this?

    Thanks

  • Do you see the track afterwards in Garmin Connect?

II have already recorded >300 outdoor activities with my F5+ and every time distance was recorded and the quality of the track was always good (mostly running, cycling, hilking - Galileo, every second).

    Hi Alan

    thanks for your reply.

the run was not recorded in my garmin connect but my steps yes .

the strange thing is that ,when saving it ( pressing the save option of the activity ), the saving just pedals without stopping for at least a hour prior going back to the watch screen face.

so kept it plugged in for charging all day and synced with my garmin connect .still no distance recording.I dont know if i need to download further software updates but i would think that its done automatically with the garmin connect?

i usually do walks, hikes and runs , no cycling with my Fenix, any help would be most appreciated ‘

    kindest regards

    marcel

  • Switch the watch off and on again. If this doesn't help, reset it to factory defaults.

this morning i went for a hike and again it did not record the distance , the elevation, the steps, the speed is recorded but not the distance!
